America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. – Abraham Lincoln

I've used this quote before, almost ten years ago. Somehow, today, it is more relevant than ever. The United States cannot be conquered from without. It can only be subverted from within.

In the late 1970s, I remember many saying it appeared the Soviet Union was going to win. This was accepted wisdom among the American intelligentsia. They were looking for ways to manage defeat. Then came Reagan, who stated America's best days lay ahead of us, defying that assumption. Within ten years the Cold War ended with the Soviet Union, not the United States, in the dustbin of history. Much later it turned out that many of those cheerleading for the Soviet Union from within the US were funded by the Soviet Union.

Not two years ago, during the Biden Regency, many of our intelligentsia were claiming China's rise to world domination and America's fall to irrelevance was inevitable. Yet today? China's weaknesses are laid bare, and the US dominates the world - again. Many of the weaknesses of this country from 2021 through 2024 have been revealed to be self-inflicted by an elite more interested in enriching themselves than in fostering the United States.

In medieval times, castles could be breached using sappers. Theses were people who dug tunnels underneath castle walls, planted explosives, then detonated them. The walls fell under their own weight.

The same is happening here, except the sappers are known as the left. They weaken existing institutions and societal norms so that they can mold our country into their image of "utopia." They don't understand that in doing so, they will kill the very thing that made this country great . . .

I agree with Lincoln. If this country falls, it won't be because of foreigners. It will be because of our own generations-long practice of fiscal irresponsibility. If we lose our freedoms, it won't be a foreign imposition; it will be done with the consent of the American people.

My mother and others back in the 50s used to recite a quote like the one in the OP (neither of which is in the exact words of Abraham Lincoln):

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves from within"

People took it to mean we would be destroyed by the commie infiltrators sponsored by the USSR who wormed their way into our government, schools, movies, etc.

As I grew older I realized that that's not not really what's meant by "within." Those commie infiltrators are still outsiders to those of us who are within. Maybe Mom realized that, too.

This is true, but it doesn't exclude the possibility that the internal destroyers are receiving resources and encouragement from external parties. Which they are

We have, as I see it, two major vulnerabilities. The first is our unwillingness to be responsible with money, especially when it comes to government spending. The second is our American eagerness to help people. We welcome people to our shores and are surprised when they take advantage of our generosity.

That's on a societal level. On a more personal level, the more I read about people from the Civil War onward, the more I see valuable things we have lost. One big one is the drive for self-improvement. It used to be a Good Thing to do things that had no other purpose than to make you a better, healthier person; better-read, better-traveled, more interesting to yourself and others. Another big one is the repudiation of beauty and the glorification of ugliness. I have no difficulty accepting folks who choose to get covered with tattoos or have piercings that make me cringe, but I don't have to say that it's beautiful when I think that it isn't.

Of course, that makes me a grumpy old man, and worse yet, a (ick) conservative. That's the point of it all. Consolidate power by making the people who disagree with you not just wrong but disgusting. Krauthammer's Law has taken over society. Things are starting to swing back the other way, thanks to people like Fetterman who are willing to point out that the 10% radical fringe has way too much influence (that is a thing on the other side too). I hope it continues to swing back; I'm afraid we've already raised several generations who are lost in ugliness, self-hate and misery. Obama...who on earth would call that monstrosity of a "library" beautiful? But he demands that we glorify it. I don't have a problem with gay night clubs, or drag shows at bars...but Trans Story Day in an elementary school library crosses the line of tolerance for me.
