I was offered a speaking gig in late May for the first sixteen days of a twenty-eight-day cruise. I hadn’t visited Iceland, and my wife was enthusiastic. We bought warm clothes and rainproof outer garments. The weather in Iceland was great, and we had a wonderful time.
The Volendam was a great ship—our previous journey with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines was on an identical ship, so we felt at home. We flew to Boston on the 19th. There were many Scottish World Cup fans staying at our hotel, but, alas, they got knocked out of the competition later that day.
The main challenge on embarkation day was filling out the forms for the two Canadian ports. I found out that I would be talking once on the 27th and 29th and twice on the 28th. The cruise was sold out; Holland America is a very successful cruise line.
We walked around Portland the morning of the 21st and then took a shore excursion to Kennebunkport. This was the only heavy rainfall we faced during the cruise. On the 23rd, we took a cruise to Bird Island. We saw many birds, but the puffins were mainly on the water where I couldn't get any good pictures of them.
Here’s one I took of the seals:
We especially liked the walking trails in St. John’s, where we hope to visit again.
June 27-29: My four talks about GPS were well received, and I quickly sold the four books I brought.
June 30: Midnight Sun and Iceland!
July 1: Fantastic lava flows.
I hope to be invited to speak on another cruise.

Great pictures of an exotic land! It has always seemed like one of the most unusual places on earth to me. (Of course I was talking about Kennebunkport).
