For someone in his position the prudent course would be to lie low, be non-controversial, and appear to be cooperative. Instead we have the most recent installment of him crashing his contempt hearing. It was an obvious poke in the eye, and only stirred the hornet's nest. I suspect his lawyers told him he could only get away with not being arrested by the Sergeant At Arms during today's hearing crash, if he did this before a successful vote for Contempt of Congress. Of course crashing the hearing, raised the likelihood of a yes vote, but it was probably worth it in his mind.
So why these increasingly provocative actions? Well the first one is the most obvious: because he can (and it's another form of stimulation). He's always been protected from the consequences of his actions. So, consequences shonsequences. However, he's also wise in the ways of shakedowns and knows that these antics show him as bullet proof to any prospective sources of money wanting a particular outcome by official DC. So this keeps the gravy coming into his Bahamian accounts and bitcoin wallets.
But the primary objective, I think, is that he wants to make sure his father pardons him, while he (Hunter) exerts maximum pain on his father for what we all suspect his father did to him in his youth. He keeps the pressure up until whomever in the White House is determining these things says, the cost of a pardon is lower than the cost of not pardoning.
So yeah, there's some fox in the crazy. He also has probably observed how TDS helps Trump, and thinks a little HDS might benefit him.

Certainly possible. Although it's also possible that all the crack etc has messed him up so much that he sometimes just can't control himself.
I thought interrupting the work of Congress was INSURRECTION! and required that he be locked in the DC gulag for three years -- at least!

I haven't kept close track, how many of Hunter's charges are federal vs state? Joe can only pardon him for federal charges.

He is a Biden and therefore susceptible to believing his own BS. He is a persecuted recovering addict and artiste!
He must have been told that a pardon was out of the question until after the election. Plan A was to let a corrupt DOJ stall and undercharge him with that bogus plea deal and then walk and/or stall procedurally until after the election when he could be pardoned for whatever was left over or still on the record.
If he is convicted of anything before the election, the Dems may well hold their noses when President Robert Peters/JRB Ware pardons him claiming runaway MAGA persecution. If Biden drops out, the pardon will be instant.
This DOJ will not act on any congressional sanctions (Congress does not have its own enforcement power) so he can thumb his nose at the GOP House, steal the Speaker's podium, or take a dump on the House floor without any consequence.

I'm not certain, but I think they're all Federal. Unless the Delaware or California taxing authorities decide to have a go.
