A Lethbridge-area farmer was arrested for unlicensed production of eggs and building a barn to house more chickens to produce more eggs.

To own a legal egg-laying hen, you must buy 1 unit of quota. The 2024 price of quota was $754.75. These quotas are set by Canada's federal government. Alberta had a total quota for 2023 that was 3,131,819 hens... Or 10.24% of the national market.

That poor hen must be spraying out eggs like a machine gun in order to earn her $754.75 back. Forget feed, labor, utilities and infrastructure. Simply put, how can a farmer ever hope to break even with this overhead?

The real open secret about Canadian agriculture management strategy is that it's designed to bankrupt producers. The government controls all input costs through taxation and fertilizer use through environmental regulation (although not strictly applicable to poultry farming). They're purposefully vacuuming every penny possible off the farm into their own corrupt pockets. I wonder, just out of idle curiosity, what the board of the Alberta Egg Growers Association takes home every year? Executives? PR and other Munchkins? I bet they all earn way more than the average egg farmer they claim to represent does.

I wonder if the Egg Growers of Alberta ever considered my Kneecap Quota? 1 unit of Quota = 1 functional kneecap. Now I'll give them a bargain: An even $750 per unit of quota. Otherwise, the goose neck comes out and this mob will become the Hop Along Gang. Live the mafia lifestyle, get the mafia treatment...

If Premier Danielle Smith is going to get serious about Albertan independence, this system has to be collapsed completely.

Now let’s all sit down and be lectured about free markets by Canadians miffed about U.S. tariffs.

Canadian politicians of all stripes have been rallying behind supply management since ending it became the United States’ price for renewing NAFTA. Maxime Bernier even lost his position on the Conservative front bench for describing supply management as a cartel.

    Article content

Supply management is a cartel. Although lawful, it operates like any price-fixing scheme hatched in a smoky back room. What is more, it imposes costs on Canadian consumers that far exceed the costs of all other price fixing combined.

The basic principle behind supply management and price fixing is the same: a group of producers (in the case of supply management, a marketing board run by agricultural producers) sets the price at which all products must be sold.

Never had much use for Maxime Bernier, but at least he stood up for what was right...

I can't find the price ... But Iam looking to find out how much it costs to legally milk a cow...

This is really unbelievable! You can't raise chickens without being taxed by the Canadian government?
