Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.
When a country is failing, it tends to become dangerous. It will attempt to conceal its weakness by invading neighbors. There is a reason we fear China and Russia so much right now – they’re desperate.
For decades, the left concealed their raw thirst for power by draping their brutal tactics in the benevolence of Marxism. “We’re just doing this in the name of equality. No one should be hungry when someone else is wealthy. We seek only to level the playing field. It’s all about fairness.” Marxism gave power-hungry leftists the illusion of an ideology. Perhaps even a soul. They often touted the Soviet success story – thriving agriculture, booming economy, happy citizens cheerfully chipping in for the common good. Walter Duranty is often singled out as knowingly lying about what Marxism really did to people, but most of the leaders of the left were no better.
The collapse of the Soviet Union was a setback. Many felt that this would be the end of the left as a political movement. But critics of the left didn’t understand that Marxism was never the point, anyway. The exposure of the Marxist catastrophes around the world may have made the left more desperate, like a failing country. But it probably didn’t matter as much as one might expect.
The political right is held together by a belief in a fairly simple set of principles: Individual liberty, individual responsibility, property rights, a limited government, the rule of law and not of men, and a few other things.
This makes it difficult for a typical conservative to understand the left. The left looks to us like a never-ending series of revolutions. This is mistaken. The left is just one continuous revolution, but its topics change with the political climate of the day. Many of their causes are directly at odds with one another, but it doesn’t matter, because the causes don’t matter either. All that matters is political power.
The left keeps its followers in a constant state of rage over whatever is popular at the time, in an effort to create and maintain a solid and motivated political power base.
This is not only a feature of the American left. Check out these two paragraphs from a brilliant article by Drieu Godefridi, about the political climate in Spain:
…
For the past several years, I’ve wondered why Western Civilization has decided to commit suicide in such a rapid and coordinated fashion. Why did all Western countries simultaneously elect self-loathing fools who all opened their borders at the same time, welcoming in millions of military-age men from third-world countries who are openly hostile to Western Civilization?
There is only one reason to do this. They seek to “fundamentally transform” their own culture – meaning destroy it and put something else in its place – that’s what Obama meant by that phrase as well. Why? Their voters didn’t ask for this. Why did all of us do the same thing at the same time? It seems so sudden.
Maybe it wasn’t so sudden. Maybe the example of Spain is relevant to the rest of us. Maybe the collapse of the Soviet Union made the left less constrained by maintaining the appearance of benevolence offered by Marxism. Maybe Orwell was right: 'All tyrannies rule through fraud and force, but once the fraud is exposed they must rely exclusively on force.'
Scott Johnson has a great post up on Powerline about a book I’ve not read: “Camp of the Saints” by Jean Raspail, which predicts the collapse of Western Civilization, through the very events we’re witnessing today, on pretty much this exact timeline. The book was written in 1973. Check out this passage from the preface, written by the author 10 years after the book was published, about a vision he had (emphasis mine):
"A million poor wretches, armed only with their weakness and their numbers, overwhelmed by misery, encumbered with starving brown and black children, ready to disembark on our soil, the vanguard of the multitudes pressing hard against every part of the tired and overfed West. I literally saw them, saw the major problem they presented, a problem absolutely insoluble by our present moral standards.
To let them in would destroy us. To reject them would destroy them."
While Judeo-Christian ethics have helped make Western Civilization great, they may also contribute to its downfall. “I am my brother’s keeper,” and other such messages of tolerance and empathy have made our culture more humane and welcoming than other cultures around the world. But it can also lead from tolerance to growth, to wealth, to guilt, to self-destructive immigration policies, to cultural suicide.
Martin Luther King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This is absurd if taken literally, of course. He was just trying to achieve his objectives of the day, by inspiring white guilt. But such ideas are still taken seriously on the left. And they have the potential to destroy Western Civilization. I doubt that was MLK’s intention. But ideas have consequences.
Our schools and entertainment industry have been controlled by the left for decades, and have now trained at least two generations of Westerners to view Western Civilization as evil and oppressive. Not worthy of defending.
Our students have been taught that the political left attempts to protect the poor and the vulnerable from the oppression of Western Civilization. The left says that they care about fairness. But is that even possible?
Are those of us in Western countries really responsible for the material well-being of every person on Earth? If we are, that is doomed to fail. It can’t work. Obviously.
But yet, we seem determined to try. Ostensibly.
Or do we? Is that why we’re opening our borders to those who hate us and our civilization? Fairness? Is that why? Or is this intentional cultural suicide? Or is it intentional cultural murder from a revolutionary left that seeks only political power?
I honestly don’t know. Although obviously, it doesn’t matter. All those roads end up in the same place.
But one thing is clear. This revolution will end up like every other, with the leftist revolutionaries killed first. The “Queers for Palestine” crowd will find that their new Muslim overlords will go way beyond not respecting their pronouns.
As always, the left will find that it cannot win its revolution without destroying the society that allowed them to protest. And they won’t like what replaces that society.
What’s happening in Minnesota is absurd. Watching beautiful European cities turn into third-world hell-holes seems surreal. When New Yorkers elected Mamdani, many laughed. I did not. It’s always the same. It’s always the same. It’s always the same. Here we go again.
Somewhere, Robespierre is laughing.
The loss of Western Civilization will be absolutely catastrophic. To everyone on earth.
It's sad to watch.
As always, I really hope I'm wrong about all this...

I have said it before... regarding the "Red/Green Alliance": The Left are the Mensheviks to the Middle Eastern and sub-Saharan African immigrants Bolsheviks. And they will eventually suffer the Mensheviks’ fate. You’d think that the history of their own movement would make this lesson clear. But no.
Middle Eastern and sub-Saharan African immigrants, too, have hitched their wagons to creatures that will devour them. Either the Russian Bear or the Chinese Dragon, whichever one emerges victorious, will have little use for the Islamists once the Islamists have done their part in the destruction of the West. The Islamists are too dangerous a weapon to leave rattling around so they will be eradicated.
These groups are so focused on destroying Western Civilization that they are blind to what will come next.

Recently I listened to an interview with Raymond Ibrahim discussing the growth of Islam in Western Europe, or maybe specifically the UK. He was asked if the situation had reached the point of no return; was western civilization lost there?
His response was very good. If the culture of the west adheres to the rule of law imposed by the left, they will never halt the decline. He did not believe the situation could be reversed, unless the situation became "primitive." Perfectly put.
My thought: everyone looses.

Yikes. That is terrifying.
I also think it is likely correct, though.
This is how far we've come. It's called "Progress".

I've listened to some of his interviews. Very well read. Great historical perspective.
And he is one bright dude. Golly.

A great post, Dr. B! Since you mention 1973's Camp of the Saints, I wonder if anyone else here has ever seen 1973's The Catholics, a British TV movie set in the near future, when the Church is now run from the Ecumen Centre in Amsterdam, and backpacking hippie priests are helicoptered into parishes still celebrating the forbidden Latin Mass, to report and arrest rebels.
