I am going to vote for Donald Trump this November.

Barack Obama was the first president I ever voted for. In 2016 I caucused for Bernie Sanders and then voted for Hillary Clinton. Twenty-twenty was similar, where I voted for Bernie in the primary (the state switched from caucusing to a primary) but then voted for Joe Biden. I don’t know when it started, maybe it was when it started to seem like the Biden administration was more interested in prolonging the war in Ukraine instead of giving them what they needed to win before a generation of men were slaughtered. Or maybe it was the incessant chatter about how Trump is a threat to democracy so he needs to be prosecuted for all of his crimes, but it is just a coincidence that they all needed to be tried in 2024. But the final blow has been the Democratic Party’s inability to condemn antisemitism without mentioning Islamophobia in the next sentence or to condemn Hamasniks whom they have let block roads, trapping people for hours.

I think Trump is a terrible person who had a mediocre presidency at best, but given the alternative what other choice is there…

    I am curious why you say that. I suspect that. i am older, but I guess that has little relevance other than the number of presidents I’ve seen

    Before the 2016 election, he was very low on my list. I guess Ted Cruz was at the top. I was raised in the south and Trump seemed to embody the traits of a Yankee. A lot of his worst expressions were in reaction to being attacked, but he also said some weird stuff - like about Cruz’s father

    Virginia primaries don’t have much impact, so my vote for Trump was a no-brainer. My expectations weren’t very high

    Then, he started doing things that made sense. For example, becoming energy self-sufficient had a far reaching impact on foreign policy. As the economy picked up, I could sense the growing optimism. A simple example was my hair dresser (for an old guy, that means barber). She and her husband were legal immigrants from India. They expanded their shop to add one closer to me and hired multiple assistants

    Now, under Biden, things are really different. Restaurants closed and haven’t reopened, my hairdresser is usually the only one in the shop when I go in. The sense of optimism is gone

    I agree that much of that is the slow return from Covid and shut downs, but there is more to it than that.

    For me, just two things are enough to want Trump back: the southern border and how Biden has treated Israel (it is irrelevant that I am not Jewish) We have set ourselves up for internal attack and taught our allies that they can’t count on us.
