Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.
In my opinion, leftism has no ideology other than the pursuit of power and control. For many decades, they used Marxism as a tool to achieve their goals of gaining political power. It’s a simple approach, really, once you recognize that nearly everyone considers people wealthier than themselves to be rich, no matter how well off they are. Even the wealthy wish they were wealthier and are jealous of those with more money. Everyone has jealousies and resentments.
Thus, using Marxism to gain political power is very straightforward: You simply convince people that the reason they are poor is that other people are rich. It doesn't have to make sense. Play off their jealousies and resentments, promise them that if they elect you, you’ll correct these egregious injustices, and then everyone will live in joyous harmony.
This fits well with human nature. We tend to take credit for our successes, but we tend to blame others for our setbacks. Marxism is little more than a formalized program of exactly those tendencies that we all have already. It’s a good way to gain political power, particularly for those who have nothing positive to offer the voters. It works well.
Except in America. Our national ethic of personal freedom and free markets creates wealth on a scale never seen before. And, unfortunately for Marxists, it also creates social mobility. Poor people can become rich, and often do, if they work hard and take risks. Getting someone to hate a rich person is more difficult if that someone intends to become a rich person one day. Freedom and social mobility make Marxism less powerful as a political weapon.
So American leftists made an adjustment. A very dangerous adjustment.
Leftists still use schools, news media, Hollywood, the administrative state, social media, etc., to saturate our society with Marxism. But rather than teaching everyone to resent those wealthier than themselves, leftists are now teaching everyone to resent the oppressors.
They teach that everyone is either oppressed or an oppressor. Oppressors are essentially white heterosexuals. The oppressed are absolutely everybody else.
The point is that now, rather than being jealous of what somebody has (money), we are being taught to hate who that person is (a white heterosexual).
Social mobility is no longer a problem for the left. You can’t change races like you can change your financial situation. And who would want to change to the evil race anyway?
Plus, the only way a white heterosexual can appear less oppressive and evil is by supporting leftism. And they had better be way left, if they want to be convincing.
This can create some odd visuals, like billionaires Oprah and LeBron giving speeches about how oppressed they are. Or like radical Muslims supporting trans-sexual abortion fans. Or like Greta switching from criticizing global warming to supporting jihad overnight. Or whatever. But if you saturate the market, you can eventually make this sort of thing seem almost normal. Just keep pounding away - everyone is either oppressed or an oppressor. There is no third option. And the white heterosexuals are the oppressors. And that's it.
And for some reason, there are no white “third world countries,” so it’s easier to keep the narrative sort of consistent... If you don’t think about it too much. Which, believe me, most people don’t. Hitler picked the Jews. Whatever.
Modern Democrats are taking a very different approach than the National Socialists did in Germany in the mid-1900s. Hitler tried to UNIFY his people by vilifying a historically persecuted minority group. Democrats are trying to DIVIDE their people by vilifying the dominant group in America - economically, culturally, etc. White heterosexuals built America and continue to sustain it. Vilifying them is a bold move.
Like many other destructive fools, Karl Marx was antisemitic. But I suspect that he would agree more with the approach of today's Democrats: leverage the insecurity of individuals by persecuting the successful.
But the big difference is that Hitler used the resources of the government to persecute Jews. Democrats are mostly focusing on encouraging their followers to persecute their opposition. Encouraging citizens to hate each other. Encouraging violence in the streets. The Nazi approach is easier to control. Creating hostility between fellow citizens can lead to a civil war. Time will tell which approach turns out to be more destructive.
As I see it, the change had been coming for a little while, but it became the official policy of the Democratic Party during the Obama administration. And it has proven very effective. AOC and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson make no sense outside of this framework. Neither does Obama. But within this framework, they are powerful forces to be reckoned with. And just look at the impact of the George Floyd protests, or the Kavanaugh hearings.
And this is all just peanuts compared to what’s coming.
Many are extremely concerned about how comfortable modern Democrats have become with assassinations and political violence. But from their standpoint, it makes sense. They’re no longer old Marxists, droning on about economic policies. They are new Marxists: Freedom fighters, protecting the oppressed and destroying the oppressors. Violence is not just acceptable in this new reality, it is admirable.
They don’t hate your money. They hate you.
Again, this is a very effective way to gain political power.
Their quest for political power is unencumbered by ethics, which leftists seem to have accepted. Marxism is not their ideology. It is a tool they use to gain power and control. They don’t have an ideology. That would be limiting. Their only ideology is the pursuit of power and control. That is dangerous. And with this new blend of Marxism and identity politics, it is much more dangerous.
Economic Marxism fostered a sense of entitlement, which killed gratitude, which created misery and depression. Identity Marxism is fostering a sense of hate and anger, which is leading to violence, which has the potential to destroy the greatest country the world has ever seen.
Karl Marx would be proud. So would Alinsky, Robespierre, Mao, and a long list of other destructive leftists. I’m not sure that Obama can take credit for the idea behind this new approach, but he certainly can be credited with implementing it very effectively.
Joe Biden was the most successful president in history in terms of getting what his political party wanted. This system works. Even Kamala Harris would have been effective in this system, probably even more than Biden. Imagine that. And if fools like Obama, Biden, and Harris can use this so effectively, imagine what a political talent like Bill Clinton could do with this. The mind reels.
For the hundredth time, Trump did not create this environment. He was created by it. There’s a reason that typically calm and stoic conservatives voted for a loose cannon like Trump. They’re scared.
And they should be.

"Democrats changed Marxism to something that works better in America"
It figures. Americans have a knack for finding ways to make things work, even when they shouldn't. Still, the underlying assumption by the left is that they can make Marxism function indefintely.
They can't.
One major premise of Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged is what happens when the producers, innovators, and overachievers have had enough and go on strike. We already see people and businesses fleeing blue states. One can only hope the loss of power in those states (via House representation) shifts the balance of power enough in the right direction.
Then there's the old adage about socialism failing because it eventually runs out of other people's money. Unfortunately, capitalism can fail too for a similar reason (it runs out of capital to invest). Unless we get our fiscal house in order, we will fail either way . . .
Great post, Dr. B!

At this point, I don’t even care what you wrote (although I’ll be reading it momentarily). I’m just thrilled to see the Dr. B byline. My bingo card needs a bourbon reference too. Can’t wait to find out!

If we lose our country, it will be because we gave it away. A large portion of our country is feeling very generous thanks to "the long march through the institutions." Look at Minneapolis. Look at the blue southwest. Look at Virginia. Heck. Look at Georgia. We were invaded, on purpose. Look at Americans fighting to keep child predators, murderers, drug pushers, and freeloaders in the country. We must be smarter than our enemies. Look at polls that show Trump’s numbers dropping over ICE actions after Democrats create violent situations. They were rewarded after the summer 2020 riots. They will foment chaos until 2028 and blame Trump because people were suckers in 2020. Like I said, only if we give it away.

And studies have shown that white women are very racist against white people. The AWFLs are financially comfortable, but are still radicalized by Marxist propaganda. We have a case that people that benefited from the work of their ancestors and determined to destroy the country they have benefited from. Crazy!
I will disagree on the part about the movement not being funded by taxpayers. There is a large amount of government spending that goes to waste/fraud/abuse and portion of that funds the radicals. I saw an estimate of 42,861 NGOs and nonprofits handling $120 billion per year in Minnesota. If 1% of that is skimmed, that is $1.2 billion to fund the commie/Marxists movement.

It took me a long time to come around to this, but it's 100% true. They think they are the good people and they vote for the good people and that is all that matters. Forget discussing public policy.
They aren't free enough. The Fed creates too much inflation and then the already wealthy, the government, and the people that levered up at the proper time effectively steal from everybody else and it's totally regressive. The regressive nature of this creates socialism and populism demand.
