Tuesday the United States Navy did something they have not done in over 80 years - sink an enemy ship with a torpedo fired from a submarine.
The Iranian ship, IRIS Dena, had taken part in a naval exercise organised by India in the Bay of Bengal from February 18 to 25 and was returning home when the US sank her in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka.

If the IRIS Dena had stayed in port in India (a neutral harbor) she would be afloat now; interred until the war ends, but available to return home once peace is reestablished. Was she ordered home by the Iranian senior naval command? If so, what a stupid decision!
I wonder how many Iranian sailors were rescued from the water. Surely some of the crew survived the sinking? It looks like the entire stern was blown away from the keel, and that it sank within a few minutes of the torpedo strike.

The torpedo came from a US fast attack nuclear submarine. The Dena Class Frigate sunk was one of Iran's newest frigates and included missile attack capabilities. 17 Iranian ships to include frigates and one of their most advanced submarines have been destroyed. In addition, naval docking areas and facilities have been destroyed. Their warships were all docked in one area with the exception of the one that was torpedoed in the Indian Ocean. Their small attack boats have been hit in another area in the Hormuz Strait.
Iran still has mine laying capability in the Hormuz Strait, but US Naval forces are operating in the Indian Ocean, and they are not going to share or allow the Iranian Navy to operate in the Indian Ocean.
