Flyover 56 – Conservangelism and Kate Braestrup
This week we are joined by Kate Braestrup, converted conservative, well-loved Ricochet member, author, mother, chaplain… the list goes on and on! We talk about conservative evangelism, echo chambers, and a little bit about Kate’s most recent book. Enjoy!
Kate’s other books can be found all over the place, but start here!
While you’re at it, check out Zach’s book!
Opening includes music from Ronald Jenkees; Closing music was Daft Punk.

Economics in One Lesson is a great book. I loved it.
Kate, I just wanted to say that your “conversion” experience really struck a chord with me.
When I first joined Ricochet, I was nearing the end of my own liberal-mindedness and I believe Ricochet (plus arguments with Ryan over chat) had the same effect on me: the realization that people actually had well-thought-out ideas and arguments on the right. I spent years on forums where people on the right were less educated, clumsily parroting their talking points without any facts/statistics/etc. I, too, had surrounded myself with an entirely leftist echo chamber and judged people as lesser for disagreeing with me. After all: I had a computer science degree and the “right” viewpoints and I could never ever ever be wrong, right?
I realized just how far I’d gone after I got into an argument with Terry about evolution where I implied he was an idiot for not agreeing with me and he got offended.
I try to be careful now about not letting the pendulum swing too far in the other direction and creating a conservative echo chamber for myself.
Anyways, just wanted to emerge from my lurking to say that I’m a fan and I plan on reading your book!
Thank you, Julie!
See, guys? There’s hope…
I’m always happy when I see there’s a new Flyover podcast.
and that makes us happy! :)
Thanks for this, very interesting conversation. I listened all the way through. Grin.
Even when Ryan was talking?
we call that “bathroom break” time.
Maybe we’ll have you on the podcast to talk about it?
Sure! Any time!
…wait.
The Max segments always make me laugh! But for real, you should have him on as a guest again, Ryan!
This really was good stuff.
I definitely agree that telling people hard truths is a hard way to persuade them and I agree that Trump’s appeal is based in large part on the perception that he tells it like it is, but that perception is only superficially accurate. Trump tells hard truths about the people he isn’t trying to win over. Anchor babies being a prime example. He doesn’t tell hard truths to his supporters. He sells easy answers. Dim prospects for unskilled workers? It’s not due to technological advancement and structural changes in the economy. It’s because China is cheating and our leaders are stupid! Government spending is unsustainable? We don’t need to reform middle class entitlements. We can just get rid of waste, fraud and abuse.
Agreed. Trump is a manipulator, and while “telling people what they want to hear” does sometimes include the truth, that is not the ultimate goal.
His main appeal is calling the media liars, which conservatives know to be true.
Ryan, can you fix the spelling of my name in the title? Love,
Bra-strap
I could swear I heard you say to someone that it’s actually pronounced that way! :)
Your podcast went on too long, and ended too soon. I don’t know how you did that, but I wanted to hear more of it. You guys need to talk a lot faster!
Removed by poster as pointless.
Hahaha, that’s exactly what my wife says. The pace is soooooooo slow! Well, we’re a couple of Montanans. :)
I really love listening to your podcasts guys. “No. 1 podcast on Ricochet” is no random boast. But …. there’s always a “but”…. Could you maybe be more attentive to your guest when they’re trying to get their comments into the conversation?
Yielding is a work in progress… :)
Wasn’t Vicryl on here before, or was that something else?
Great episode.
Let’s Talk with Vicryl Contessa
Thanks.
Is that thing with you at the beginning of this show a gag?
(max also provides the bonus clip after the closing song)
Ryan—my name?
I fixed it.
Wait, what? Was there a typo?
I am dumb as a rock, sometimes!
Yeah, you spelled it baestrup, ya big dummy. <marklevin>That’s right; I said it!</marklevin>
I guess you want Kate to be your bae. ;-)
