Friday was cap and gown day for Steve at Pepperdine's commencement for the School of Public Policy class of 2025, while John Yoo is on the road somewhere at an undisclosed location, so Steve and Lucretia kick around a couple of seemingly unrelated stories about the Amish (the ultimate opt-out community) and the latest Supreme Court argument involving human nature and the right of parents to opt-out from public school nihilism. And even though John was absent, instead of beating him up we praised his New York Post article on how and why Trump should prevail at the Supreme Court over what might be called the onslaught of Lawfare 2.0.
And then as a change of pace we offer Steve's recent conversation with energy journalist extraordinaire Robert Bryce (whose Substack is very much worth following). Bryce always has a way of explaining the often eyes-glazed-over numbers of the energy world, but in this interview he extends himself into a one-man DOGE, revealing who is the number-one leftist advocacy group fattening at the federal funding trough.

Can you recommend the best article that Mr. Bryce has written on the differentiation between power density and energy? Also, there is nothing wrong with beer drinkers. I've been drinking beer since Steve has been in knickers. Snobbery is ill becoming of the hosts. The only fair game are teetotalers. I have found that many, not all mind you, who abstain from alcohol consumption lack a sense of humor. There... I'm biased.

1n 1987, I was aboard a beautiful sailboat in the Caribbean. We had 800 or so square feet of sail up in a steady 15+ knot wind. With all of that canvas up and the sails well-trimmed, we were making every bit of 7 knots through the water. It was a beautiful, glorious sail.
Joyfully, I commented on how impractical wind power is, since it is so diffuse, and requires so much sail to produce relatively modest results. The skipper of the boat (my Dad), an electrical engineer, pointed out that we were making the same speed that the 7 horsepower diesel engine could deliver.
I'm upset that the engineering community has not been universally up in arms over the push for "renewable energy," namely wind and solar. Even if they were reliable energy sources - which they are not and never can be - their insanely low power density makes them perpetually impractical for use with a large energy grid.
