Either the X Marks the Spot campaign had faded by the time I was born or it wasn't a thing in our area of the country, I don't remember it. Today, there are quite a few roadside memorials here in New Mexico. These are put there by the families. Some have solar lights so they are visible at night. A lot of bicycle memorials in town.
