I have heard that builders used newspaper as windbreaks or draft prevention (a form of insulation) in walls the way today builders use Tyvek house wrap. Why use virgin paper when you can reuse newsprint?

The problem with newsprint has always been the high acid content in the paper. That's why it yellows and becomes so brittle. Serious conservators usually soak a page in a solution to neutralize the acid and then mount on art board.
