Now that I've learned our Arthurian forebears can't even manage a cheeseburger, I'm taking Great Britain off the list of places I'd like to visit.

Nothing is more satisfying than avoiding local fare when I travel abroad, just so I can see the gasps of horror when I return stateside, and respond to the question "How was the local fare?" with "I only eat American, you commie sympathizer".

One of my best burgers ever was in a little delicatessen in Phaleron, a suburb of Athens, in 1984. The beef had oregano and other Greek spices mixed in with it, and the cheese was a local feta. It was delectable.

There’s a joint in Tokyo with roots in Brentwood, CA which claims to be Japan’s first gourmet hamburger restaurant (since 1985). The founder says she “wanted to fulfill her young daughter’s wish to eat a real American hamburger.” So, these aren’t the ridiculously tall stacks of food that one can barely hold and bite. They’re made in plain sight right behind the counter.

Also serving classic shakes in exotic flavors like Gorgonzola and Mascarpone. Think about that, Mayor McCheese!

    Sounds good to me.
