The original Star Trek was about a planet earth that had accepted American values. Much of the rest of the universe was occupied by freedom-crushing empires (e.g., Klingons) or places run by stupid cults or sheer primitivism, a rather 20th century American view of our planet. The Federation did not impose its values (Prime Directive) but had no qualms about using force.
The crew of the Enterprise could sometimes question their actions and impact on others. Introspection is safe and healthy if we know that we are the good guys, a presumption that was once characteristic of Americans. A weird self-loathing periodically interrupted by overt narcissism is the moral bipolar disorder that afflicts us now and makes for lousy SciFi.
