Another crazy week in American politics, another milestone. The Ricochet Podcast hits the 700-episode mark, and the chatter continues. Ann Coulter drops in — more briefly than expected, due to technical issues — to give us her hot take on the Republican National Convention. Then James, Steve, and Rob debate the Republican platform for the 21st century, find common ground on brass bands and Doric columns, and reflect on the passing of Bob Newhart.

- Opening sound this week: Trump makes his acceptance speech, Fox 32 (Chicago) talks polling.

I see a Bob Newhart influence in Bob Balaban’s acting.

Rob: "It's tough to be clear."

Obama: Tell me about it. No one let's me. I'm always asking, "Let me be clear."

The purpose of this convention was to convince enough voters that Trump should be elected, not convince Americans of the virtue of fiscal conservatism. He needs a bigger tent than what we have in a 50/50 country. He increased Republican voters in 2020. He is increasing it now. The speaker choices reflect an outreach to others. Far too many on our side have too strict a purity test and a deaf ear.

I have watched some of his rallies just to hear what he has to say. One doesn't have to listen to each one, but listening to a few gives me a sense of the genuine Trump. His speech was long but not surprising. He connects to a live audience and talks to them in a different way than politicians do giving a stump speech. His sentiments are real, politicians tell lies.

Re fiscal conservatism... If it isn't already too late. You want it implemented top down but that has never worked. It must be implemented bottom up. First you must teach the population why it is important. Nobody does that. Congress creates the budgets, the president only makes his own submission and signs the final product. Politicians don't give us a fiscal budget because that isn't what their voters want. Those who are willing to shut down the government over spending are punished. (Cruz, Tea Party, etc.) Expecting the most fiscally conservative president, whoever that might be, to change the country is a fantasy. First change the culture.

I used to love Ann and even have seen her in person. She gives Trump no credit for what he has done on the border and doesn't blame the Republican Party for being weak on immigration. Her hatred is irrational and has deprived us of 8 years of her sharp wit. At this point, I have given up hope that I will ever see a return of that wit I so loved.

    Great tribute to Bob Newhart.
