The government shutdown drags on, but the president's pulled off his biggest deal yet. Noah Rothman joins Charlie and Steve to discuss the monumental advancement toward regional stability and the unique talents for these wins by American and Israeli leaders — talents for which they are unlikely to receive due honors. Plus, Hayward and Cooke consider shutdown messaging strategy, mock the MacArthur Foundation for its dimwitted grant giving, and scratch their heads at the fact that the name "Katie Porter" and the word "frontrunner" appear so often in the same sentence.

  • Sound from this week's open: California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter breaks down in an interview with CBS News’s California-based correspondent Julie Watts.

LOLing out loud as I notice the two staffers intruding on Porter's shot. Well played, photo-editing guy!

I think looking at and listening to Katie Porter was part of the "enhanced interrogations" they were doing to extract information from terrorists. As a longtime Ricochet subscriber, let me say if you ever post another picture of that person, I will cancel my subscription faster than I canceled the NYT and Wapo! No one should have to endure that.

I listened to the Noah Rothman segment three times. Excellent information and analysis.

Having said that, there is this smart guy that calls into the Salem news shows. He gave a very compelling explanation that it's Hamas's Islamic duty to not stop fighting. Plus, they can lie about it. I wish they would get the hostages back and then cover the thing with bunker busters and MOABs.

Only halfway through but wanted to be sure to thank @StevenHayward for calling it "Kuh-TAR". This business of calling it Gutter (and worse, calling the inhabitants "GUT-terees") is so grating I can hardly stand it (looking at you, John Podhoretz). What is wrong with using the English-language pronunciation of foreign place names? It's right up there with the 2006 Winter Olympics which were apparently held in a place called "Torino".

Anyway, this is a huge hobbyhorse of mine and I know there are more important things to talk about, but kudos to Mr. Hayward.

    EDIT: Noah too! Well done.

And now people are pronouncing Turkey differently…
