Panel Podcast: Asylum in the U.S. and Europe

The Center for Immigration Studies hosted a panel discussion examining present asylum laws in the United States and in Europe, how they work, their impact on illegal immigration, and proposals for reform. Members of the newly formed International Network for Immigration Research (INIR), which includes like-minded think tanks in the U.S., Israel, Hungary, France, and the UK, discussed how their countries are navigating their current asylum crises and address the shared challenge of immigration control. Participants examined whether the post-WWII asylum regime is an anachronism that needs to be re-thought and the proposed asylum reforms being discussed in the current negotiations between Republicans and Democrats. Listen to hear about the European Union Migration and Asylum Pact and what the U.S. can learn from this newly passed agreement. Mark Krikorian, the Center’s executive director and host of Parsing Immigration Policy, moderates this rebroadcast of the Center's panel. Host Mark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

Panel Podcast: The Ukraine War and Its Impacts on Migration

Summary A series of recent missile strikes by Russia against Ukrainian cities, including Lviv, the western city that has been housing a large number of the internally displaced Ukrainians, has increased the likelihood of a new wave of Ukrainian refugees. But other factors - including potential energy disruptions in Ukraine this winter and in food and fertilizer exports leading to famine in Africa - are also expected to impact the number of migrants from Ukraine and Africa. These and other issues were addressed in a panel discussion, sponsored jointly by the Center for Immigration Studies and the Hungarian Migration Research Institute. Experts from the United States and Europe examined the refugee and internally displaced person (IDP) challenges produced by the war and faced by Ukraine, Europe, Africa, and the United States. Mark Krikorian, the Center’s executive director and host of Parsing Immigration Policy, moderates this rebroadcast of the Center's recent panel. Host Mark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

The Hijacking of Asylum - Responses in the U.S. and Europe

Summary The Center for Immigration Studies hosted a joint panel discussion with the Hungarian Migration Research Institute, examining international asylum law, its application in both Europe and the United States, and its impact on national sovereignty. With the Russia-Ukraine conflict raging and with millions of refugees potentially fleeing Ukraine, it is the perfect time for serious analysis and conversation about current policies that indiscriminately provide benefits to all border-crossing strangers versus more-targeted policies that would be more consistent with the spirit of the original international refugee agreements. Mark Krikorian, the Center’s executive director and host of Parsing Immigration Policy, moderates a rebroadcast of the Center's recent panel. Scholars from the Center and MRI examine immigration laws and policies that are being swallowed by the asylum exception and provide solutions to “The Hijacking of Asylum.” Host Mark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

Europe and the U.S. Experience Similar Migration Challenges

View Podcast Archive Summary More than a million migrants and refugees arrived in Europe in 2015. Many European countries faced humanitarian, legal, and physical challenges from the historic number of migrants, including Hungary, which had the highest number in proportion to its population. At the time, scholars and policymakers had limited knowledge of the root causes and dynamics of irregular migration in Europe. In response to the need for information, the Migration Research Institute (MRI), a think tank focusing on migration, was established in the fall of 2015 “with the undisguised purpose of researching and explaining immigration to Europe in a scientific and understandable way.” In this week’s episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, Viktor Marsai, research director of the Migration Research Institute (MRI) in Budapest, Hungary, discusses migration patterns in Europe, the challenges facing Europe, and future expectations.
