The Three Whisky Happy Hour: The Lowdown on RFK Jr with KJT

With Steve Hayward back in the host chair this week, the 3WHH actually breaks some real news with special guest Kelly Janes Torrance, the op-ed editor of the indispensible New York Post. This week Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is attracting surprising interest from many conservatives, visited the Post for a grilling from the Post's editorial board, and Kelly Jane opened up her reporter's notebook to share previously unreported statements RFK Jr offered at their 90-minute meeting. You won't want to miss her scoops shared exclusively with the 3WHH podcast. John Yoo was late joining us—apparently he got stuck in an extra long McDonald's drive-through line right before show time—but did manage to break down the Durham report, and also gets in on the sequels with Kelly Jane, who has a lot of thoughts on the Ukraine situation from her experiences as an election watcher in recent years. Since KJT is Canadian, we decided to honor her guest turn with exit music from the Barenaked Ladies, "New Kid on the Block," since we're definitely going to have her back on 3WHH. As mentioned early in this episode, she may not be a neat whisky drinker, but she has an epic cocktail game. We're got a short pre-roll excerpt from John on the Ricochet podcast that we think is appropriate to share with our listeners, though I think Rob Long was not amused!

Riots, Viruses, ‘Epistocracy,’ and Other Social Diseases

Funny how the COVID-19 crisis has nearly disappeared from the news, after having been the subject of wall-to-wall media attention for three months. Riots have a way of doing that, though the mass rioting doesn't seem to have concentrated the mind of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio very much, fueling further rumors that he really has shot his brains with his heavy reported dope-smoking. In this special, two-segment edition I catch up with Kelly Jane Torrance, who is nowadays an editorial board member of the great New York Post, and frequent panel guest on "Mornings with Maria" on Fox Business (tomorrow morning, June 4, in fact). Being a brand new resident of Manhattan is shock enough, but to move right before a pandemic quarantine and then rioting is asking a lot! Then in the second segment you get treated to a recent short talk I gave by Zoom to the Liberty Forum of Silicon Valley, in which I speculate about the potential long-term effects of the political responses to the COVID-19 crisis. I employ the term "epistocracy," which means "rule of the experts," as it is clear there is a drive on the claim more authority for our supposed expert class. Now that's a social disease pandemic we definitely don't need! Although I only post my opening remarks here (about 15 minutes), if you are interested in hearing (seeing really) the whole event, which included a long question and answer session, the event has been posted in its entirety on YouTube below.

From Ukraine to the Border, with Power Line’s Female All-Stars

By popular demand from listeners, this special edition of the Power Line Show features both Kelly Jane Torrance of the Washington Examiner and "Lucretia," Power Line's International Woman of Mystery. Kelly Jane is just back from serving as an official election watcher over in Ukraine, and lays out a delightful political scene that does Donald Trump one better in the TV entertainment division. Plus, as Kelly Jane keeps close tabs on Iranian affairs, we go over what's going on with Iran's repeated provocations in the Gulf. Then we turn the mic over to "Lucretia" for some serial rants about the Supreme Court and its unusual mid-summer ruling last week on Trump's border wall funding, the Mueller investigation and hearing, raising a new dog, and Steve Hayward's current drinking and grilling habits (which you can see below). Also, we let down the listener who wrote in thinking he had figured out Lucretia's identity, but alas no, because our Lucretia would never consent to appear on Conversations with Kristol, which is where our listener thought he had picked up a clue.

Touring Hot Spots: Venezuela and Iran

Venezuela has been slowly falling apart for more than a decade, but when matters reached a seeming crisis point last week, Steve Hayward decided it was high time to catch up with Mark Falcoff, the longtime Latin American expert now retired from the American Enterprise Institute, to walk us through the scene (including some terrific trivia about the structure of the Venezuelan army). Then Steve shifts focus to the other member of the new Axis of Evil—Iran—with Kelly Jane Torrance, who follows the Iranian resistance in exile for the Weekly Standard (RIP) and SpectatorUSA. But since Kelly Jane is Canadian, we couldn't resist a quick detour into the prospects for Justin Trudeau while we're looking abroad. Bumper music this week is drawn from Strangefolk; the interlude in the middle is "New Glock II," and the closeout tune is "Window Seat."

The Second Iranian Revolution?

Steve Hayward talks with Kelly Jane Torrance, deputy managing editor of the Weekly Standard, about the protests in Iran and the Iranian dissident movement in exile, which is being ignored by nearly all of the mainstream media. Torrance is one of the only journalists covering this story closely, while still making time to keep up her title as the Cocktail Queen of Washington.
