The Three Whisky Happy Hour: What Is Conservatism Conserving, Anyway?

Two favorite guests and friends join us at the bar for this week's happy hour, to hash out bar fights they started in less reputable watering holes. Jeremy Carl argues in The American Conservative that there needs to be "A Republican Counter-Elite," while Glenn Ellmers continues to spark controversy with his article a year ago, "Conservatism Is No Longer Enough," and now, last week, a sequel (channeling his Lordship Kevin Bacon in Animal House)—"'Remain Calm, All Is Well'; How Not to Save the Republic." What we're really after is a response to two great axioms from classic authors. The first is G.K. Chesterton, who wrote 100 years ago: "The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected." How is it that we've taken so long to catch up with his perception? The second is from Eric Hoffer, and bears on the dissatisfaction expressed today in the phrase "Conservatism, Inc"—"Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket."

Is America a ‘Nation of Immigrants’?

View Podcast Archive Summary On this week’s episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, Jeremy Carl, a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, discusses America’s history and values as they pertain to immigration. Carl stresses the importance of understanding what it means to be a nation and asks the question: Is America a nation of immigrants or a nation with immigrants? Carl suggests that it might be more accurate to refer to America as a nation of settlers, since the original colonists did not integrate themselves into the existing Native American society, but rather formed their own new society which eventually formed American culture. Prior to the late 1960s, those immigrating to the U.S. mirrored this American culture. Carl draws an interesting comparison between Emma Lazarus, the author of The New Colossus, the poem engraved on the 1903 bronze plaque located on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty ("Give me your tired, you poor…"), and today’s “limousine liberals”.

The Three (No) Whisky Happy Hour: Gonzo Beach Edition

Unfortunately we weren't able to fix up the usual online recording session for this week's Three Whisky Happy Hour, and attempted to assemble in person ahead of the Claremont Institute's annual dinner at Huntington Beach, this year with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (who was terrific, by the way). But we were outside, with not enough time to get organized—and without any whisky!—and the result was a bit of a train wreck. But at least it's short! (As I used to say when I still showed up for road races in my dotage, "I may be old and fat, but I'm slow! My strategy is to start of slow, and tail off from there." Well we kind of live up to that here.) Our irregular sidekick Richard Samuelson joined us, and then halfway through Jeremy Carl wandered by, so we made him sit down and join us with no preparation. We tried to cover Last Week in Wokeness and a few other things, but I'm not sure we really got anywhere. But we got so many emails from disappointed listeners than we decided to throw this episode up (literally) and let you decide. Yeah, some whisky would have made a difference.

Around the World in 80 Months? Jeremy Carl’s Epic

My guest this week is Jeremy Carl, currently a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, and formerly a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford, where he directed the Shultz-Stephenson Task Force on Energy Policy. His political writing and commentary has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, National Review, Politico, the Economist, and many other leading newspapers and magazines. Of special interest to me, however, is Jeremy's personal story in recent months. Last year Jeremy and his wife, who is an emergency room physician, decided to quit their jobs and travel around the world for an indefinite period with their five (yes, I said 5!) children, with no fixed itinerary. After eight months on the road in North America, Europe and Africa, Jeremy and his family entourage interrupted their epic and returned to the U.S. recently because of the COVID-19 lockdown. Although he hopes to resume his epic journey when the all-clear is eventually sounded (I'm hoping he'll call the book Around the World in 80 Months), I wanted to catch up with him to get a mid-term report, and elicit his insights and observations from the road on everything from populism, nationalism, foreign attitudes toward President Trump, and the topsy-turvy world of energy just now.

Bulldog Edition

Steve Hayward talks with two proud Yale bulldog alumni—James Kirchick of the Brookings Institution and Jeremy Carl of the Hoover Institution, about the mess in higher education and the mess at our border. It's a coin flip between which is the bigger mess today—immigration or college campus madness, and maybe there is a connecting thread. But stick around, we have a side dish of energy policy included, because this is a high energy podcast!
