In the Company of a Writer; Jenna Stocker on America, Memory, and the Craft of Words

Every so often, a conversation develops a life of its own. This was one of those occasions. My guest is Jenna Stocker—writer, wife, mother, Marine Corps veteran, and a thoughtful observer of American life whose work has appeared in the Daily Wire, National Review, The Federalist, and elsewhere. We begin with her recent Daily Wire essay on iconic Americana and ask whether the independent, adventurous spirit that once defined this country can still be recovered. Along the way, we explore memory, gratitude, optimism, and what it means to preserve the best of a civilization without merely living in nostalgia. From there, the conversation turns to the craft of writing itself. Why do writers continue answering the call of the page despite rejection, obscurity, and the suspicion that their words may vanish into the wind? And then, after the interview was supposedly over, two writers simply kept talking. We compared influences, shared the books and ideas that have shaped us, and reflected on the curious vocation of putting thoughts into words. The microphones, as it turned out, were still recording. I think you'll be glad they were.

A Christmas Show with Roman Genn & Ricochet VIPs

This year, Christmas finds Ricochet's own Dave Carter enjoying life in Florida while savoring the memories of holidays on the bayou in his home state of Louisiana. Whether it's childhood memories with his grandparents and great grandparents at Christmas, or stories of life in uniform, life on the road, or life in retail, Dave brings you center stage where you will experience events with him. Roman Genn, whose extraordinary art regularly graces the covers of National Review, along with the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, the Library of Congress and the White House (to name only a few), joins Dave for a conversation that spans the globe. Born in Moscow, Roman's political cartoons achieved a level of notoriety in the Soviet Union that resulted in his needing to leave the Workers' Paradise and move to the United States in 1991. Informed by the perspectives of one who witnessed the machinations of a totalitarian state up close and personal, Roman has some thoughts to share on the Russian invasion of Ukraine that you may find arresting to say the least. Oh yes, and you won't want to miss Roman's description of Christmas in Soviet Russia. Ricochet stars Rob Long, Troy Senik, and Jenna Stocker drop in to wish one and all a Merry Christmas. Then, unable to let a good Christmas show go to waste, Dave shares a Cajun version of the Twelve Days of Christmas that beats anything we've ever heard. From Christmas Blues and Zydeco to side-splitting comedy, from geopolitical analysis to Christmas stories that touch the heart and raise the spirit, this episode of The Dave Carter Show is one you won't want to miss.

An Incisive and Fun Chat with Troy Senik

Our own Troy Senik, former Presidential Speechwriter, Editor in Chief of Ricochet, and current Co-Founder and Vice President for Content at Kite and Key Media, drops by to talk about the intersection of public policy with his new endeavor at Kite & Key. But perhaps the best facet of this conversation is, simply, two friends enjoying a conversation that ranges from various approaches to communicating timely concepts to a broad audience, to super volcanos (also known as Flaming Death Holes), the attractions and liabilities of life in the northeast, and the drudgeries of going through life as "arm candy." Then, Ricochet member (and writer at The Federalist) Jenna Stocker stops by to talk about life in her hometown of Minneapolis against the backdrop of riots, Derek Chauvin trial, no-go zones in a once-vibrant city, and the tendency of people and businesses to vote with their feet when a city becomes unlivable. In an show that somehow manages to touch on nearly every facet of the current political scene, we think you'll find this episode to be an oasis of refreshing perspective. Finally, if you’re listening to Dave’s show, but you’re not a Ricochet member, there is a way you can get a 30 day free trial membership . Tune in to learn more!
