Tired of the toxicity of social media? Why not join Ricochet for just $5/month? Think of it as an online bar. Come in, have a drink, hang out, say whatever you want. But don’t badger, bully, or berate the other drinkers. That's our only rule.

It's the last week of the month, so that means it's time for another GLoP. This week, Jonah, Rob, and John discuss the good and the bad of slinging words for living, John and Rob reveal they like to watch golf but not play it, some thoughts on AT&T unloading Time Warner, how Barry Diller went from movie mogul to selling fat pants on TV, and we get a some insight into daily life in the Crescent City.

I dont think Disney can buy DC Comics. There should be Anti-Trust problems - Disney already owns Marvel, and big chunk of Boom! Studios.
I think we're coming into the seasons of discontent for media. Maybe new managements will try to be a more balanced coverage and new ideas.
Ironically and literally should also be on the list of words that are used to mean the opposite of what they are. Especially for Joe Biden Literally is mostly figurative.

Was that photo originally the Three Stooges?

I think Johan may have been talking about this portion of Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches" speech and old English:
"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,"
All the words come from before the Norman Invasion in that phrase, but one. That word is "surrender." Which was derived from French. Appropriate?

Ah, New Orleans. The Big Easy City That Care Forgot.
On my first visit, I ran into a college mate who was working in delicious local restaurants for the summer. He gave me a lift in his housemate’s car and got pulled over for running a yellow light on Canal Street. Because he had 1) committed a traffic violation and 2) couldn’t prove he had permission to drive the car (housemate was out of town), they were required to arrest him, the cops explained. But no big deal, they said, since I would be able to bail him out tout de suite for $200.
But I didn’t have that much cash on me and would have to go and get it from my hotel room, I explained. No hurry, they said. But how, I asked, was I supposed to get to my hotel and then to the police station?
Well, use this car, they said, and handed me the keys to the “stolen” car, whose owner I had never even met. Everything worked out great.
