Bad Bosses In The Bible

After a brief hiatus, GLoP is back and, well, not much has changed: John can’t remember the month, Rob’s in Los Angeles for reasons unknown, and Jonah is courageously trying to keep the conversation somewhere near coherence. The trio tackle vital topics like bad bosses (biblical and otherwise), forgotten ’70s variety shows, why The Blues Brothers is accidentally beautiful, and how nostalgia has officially gone off the rails. Somewhere along the way, there’s circumcision talk, theological tangents, and at least three references no one under fifty will understand. In short: classic GLoP — smart, ridiculous, and slightly embarrassed of itself.

Hosted by John Podhoretz, Jonah Goldberg, and Rob Long

Good to hear from Rob Long again. "They never told me I'd have to work on Sundays" might be one of the most Rob Long things I've ever heard. Though "Why was she in the shot?" comes close.

By the way, you can get a service key that'll let you control elevators directly, without waiting for the tyranny of the call button. I'd be afraid of letting Rob Long know this if I thought he ever read the comments.

With respect to things future generations will find corny, there are three categories.

    1. Fashions. I don't know what these will be; I've always been unacquainted with the rules of that world. Please let it be women with nose rings and extensive tattooing.
    2. Production values. I think there's going to be a lot of future people saying "You put up with that crap?" when it comes to --- and yes there still are some --- shared cultural experiences. Mostly I'm seeing this in terms of writing, where self-consitency or even a modicum of thought is rare to find in a modern show.
    3. Moral values. These are eternal, but also is the human need to pretend that evil is good so we can still keep doing evil. Ask the Episcopalians about that; one way or another their answer will be instructive. The thing that changes is which vice is in fashion. Gone with the Wind was understanding of the Ku Klux Klan in a way you'll never seen in a book published today. That doesn't mean mankind is more moral, it means we've upgraded the danger of racism while downgrading things like licentiousness. With that in mind there's going to be a great many things written now that'll look super awkward two generations hence.

I’m not much of a fan of Mark Levin, but after 6pm he seems to be on all the conservative talk radio stations simultaneously, here in upstate New York, so I end up listening quite a bit as I drive around. I would have to say that, as far as I can tell, Naomi Wolf has not been a guest on his radio show in quite a while.

If memory serves, at one time Wolf was appreciated by the right, as a prominent liberal who was willing to consider the possibility that not all conservatives were fascists.
