    It seems like bad form to say “American televisions have tuned out” it’s reminiscent of how an SUV drives into a crowd of holiday shoppers, apparently on its own.

    Or “borderland”, or “march”, or “in country”:  people argue about the etymology. In the medieval empire of the Kievan Rus,  the southern parts, including Kiev (or properly Kyiv), came to be known as Ukra’ina.  Which French cartographers rendered as Ukraine.
