The One with Harry Shearer

This week, we take something of a break from the rough and tumble of the news cycle and spend an hour chatting with our old friend, the great Harry Shearer (hit this link if you are one of the few unfamiliar with his work). We stalk some politics, we talk some media, we talk about Nixon (you must see Harry’s one man show Nixon’s The One immediately), we talk about comedy. Oh, just listen. You’ll love it.

Music from this week’s podcast: Hell Hole by Spinal Tap

The all new opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.

To avoid confusion, it perhaps should be called  “Another One with Harry Shearer, One of Many, and That’s a Good Thing”.

(And @jameslileks , I know you don’t care about the sports, but what do you think readers of the Star Tribune will think of you wearing a Yankees jersey?)

I expect I will get sad looks of muted disappointment.

I think that’s the best explanation of Trump Ive heard. He’s Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield’s character in Caddyshack), he could also be Willy Loman – they havent re-written the play, the play isnt over yet. I also agree that’s the connection between the billionaire and the lower and middle class of say – Wisconsin, so completely ignored by the liberal elite that their presidential candidate didnt even bother to campaign there.

Nixon’s reputation rehab was called “Project Wizard” … I googled it…

LOVED this podcast.  Harry Shearer is one of the best guests you’ve had for Ricochet podcasts.  He’s been on 3 or 4 times and they’re among the most interesting additions to the library.  I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

He looks like a .300 hitter to this Indians fan.

Also, I wanted to add, that I think it takes all – ALL – of Trump’s self control, each time he boards Air Force 1. To not spin at the top of the rolling stairs and wave his single finger salute to the cameras as he departs.

There was a Canadian politician who gave an interview after his retirement… He said something along the lines of “Its great to be out of politics, people who recognize me now wave at me with all 5 fingers again.”

“schlepping your junk all over the airport looking for an empty socket’

Hey didn’t that get some senator in trouble in Minneapolis?  There’s a wide stance of views on that though.

And didn’t a football player get in trouble trying to get fake junk through the Minneapolis airport?

Indeed.  Without using The Google I believe it was a Whizzenator on the junk of Onterrio Smith ( former Oregon star gone wrong and not just with spelling )

Harry himself has some experience with this:

We know that James has a king  size Casper mattress. And he tells us now he has a size large suitcase. James, that’s enough room to pack your whole wardrobe.

Reagan used a variation of that joke too.

This was the first time I’d heard Mr. Shearer and I too enjoyed him and the podcast.

I wouldn’t count on Pres. Trump’s self control.  We may yet see the extended middle finger.

On second thought, I believe we HAVE seen it.  Several times.

I think Harry is absolutely right: it’s not what’s actually going on (however unusual) but the hysterical response to it, from both left and right, that is soooooo tiring. One thing that also tires me is those on the right who cannot stop talking about the stench in the White House (as stinky as it is) but who, at least as far as evidenced on Ricochet, seem not to be at all concerned by the terrible, uncivil, and I would say very dangerous behavior of mainstream reporters and other presidential critics who blame Trump for their sickening lack of professionalism and then have the gall to call it push back.

You can go, Harry—but be back soon!

I want a flagship episode with James, Rob, Harry Shearer and Pat Sajak.  But you have to extend the runtime to about 3 hours or so.

For the record, the newsroom for New Orleans’ WGNO is a bar and was painted by local artist Simon.
