The Hopper toilet was standard on US passenger trains too. Amtrak finally phased them out in the 1980s. And if you've experienced systemic toilet failure on a long-distance Amtrak adventure, you've wished they hadn't.
This set of American novelty lyrics to Dvorak's Humoresque #7 (G-Flat major) probably goes back to the day after the music was published. (Mentioned in a 1941 novel, anyway.). I believe I encountered the notice ("Passengers will please refrain ...") on trains in the 60s. Although that does put me at an age where I've seen a lot of things I haven't.
