Tainted GLoP

It’s late in the evening on the last night of the month, so you know what that means: time for the 2nd GLoP of the month! In this installment, our intrepid pop culture guides walk us though weird mask rules, Foundation, Apple TV+ and the difficulties (for some) of finding new show, a very weird side effect of COVID and a possible breakthrough medication to treat it, the most unusual episode of the old Mission Impossible TV show, and the OZY Media story.

Subscribe to GLoP Culture in Apple Podcasts (and leave a 5-star review, please!), or by RSS feed. For all our podcasts in one place, subscribe to the Ricochet Audio Network Superfeed in Apple Podcasts or by RSS feed.

In 1982, when Frankie Avalon was on Happy Days, he was only 42.  And Henry Winkler was only 37.  Winkler started on Happy Days at age 29.  And the Frankie Avalon episode was season 9 out of 11.  But Ron Howard basically was out of the last 4 seasons of the show, until a final series wrap-up.

And Erin Moran was in at least some episodes, every season, from start to finish.

Most covid-vaccine-skeptical people aren’t generally anti-vaccine.  That still occurs more on the left.

If John thinks Foundation is the movie most unfaithful to its source material, he’s never read or seen Starship Troopers.

Many nurses aren’t getting vaccinated because they already have gotten Covid and the creator of one of the vaccines has said that the vaccine might trigger a cytokine storm or some other bad reaction. I don’t know why black people aren’t getting the vaccine.

The reason that food preppers put their masks down is to talk to people. Kitchens are noisy it’s always hard to hear everything.

Rob should get an Amazon Firestick. I was frustrated with all the rigmarole too. Now, I just say something like “Alexa, play Foundation” and voila, I am watching Foundation. Unfortunately Foundation really sucks though.

I had to get the Firestick because my 2016 TV can’t download the AppleTV app. That’s another thing that drives me nuts.

I have the same problem regarding the incompatibility of appletv and my tv set. Do you mean that with “firestick” you can bypass that difficulty?

Woke paranoia. The same paranoia that makes them disregard 1000 black deaths by criminals but let’s them go crazy with a police lawful shooting

When John says that someone is 900 years old or that Frankie Avalon was 70, he doesn’t mean they were literally that age. He’s exaggerating in order to point out the absurd of mature adults playing teenagers.

Yes. As long as you have a free HDMI slot. Then you can download all of the latest apps to the Firestick including AppleTV. It was really great when we spent a week at the beach recently too. I just took the Firestick with me and was able to access all my apps and subscriptions without having to navigate a strange TV and didn’t have to put in passwords, etc.

Nice to have Alexa there too. I admit it. I am a Bezos slave ;)

It makes life easier for me. With two bad knees and two bad hips, an auto immune disease and in my 60’s, I’ll take the spying for the convenience.

There’s no Amazon Portugal. It’s via Spain. That might be the reason. Even though we in Portugal purchase 10x times more english language stuff than our neighbors.

But they were only pretending to be teenagers at the very start.  It’s not like The Simpsons where Bart and Lisa have been in elementary school for over 20 years.  Already even a few years before the end of Happy Days, Fonzie was a teacher and Richie was a lawyer or something.  Were they pretending to be a teenage teacher and lawyer?

I was also pointing out that John was saying he had identified the episode as being in the last season because Richie had basically been replaced by the Married With Children guy, and Joanie (Erin Moran) had been supplanted by some other character too.  But Ron Howard was not in the last FOUR seasons except for the very end, and Erin Moran was in EVERY season.

And, as I mentioned, the Frankie Avalon episode was in season 8, out of 11.  Hardly “the last season.”

John tells some cool stories, but you can’t trust his details.
