Regarding the baby in the bathtub scene on Homeland, a similar scene appears in the Joy Luck Club, only it’s even more disturbing because, in that movie, the baby stays under. It was horrific. I gasped in the movie theater, so I’m really glad I didn’t have to see almost the same thing on TV. Also, I’m kind of surprised Jonah didn’t make the point he has made before–and that I made to a friend who was just yesterday telling me about the scene in Homeland–why didn’t she just have an abortion? Because abortion never happens in the movies or on TV (unless, of course, abortion is the subject).
As we can see Rob would kill for a set of “Abs” like that.

I really liked Boyhood, but I’m curious about something that perhaps some of you could help me with. I saw the film twice, once in Manhattan and again in Healdsburg (in the heart of California wine country). In both of these liberal strongholds there were hearty laughs when Mason’s step grandparents give him birthday gifts of a Bible and a shotgun. I thought they were pretty great gifts. So I wonder if there was a different reaction to that scene in the Red States.

I was always conflicted about the TV series ‘Medium’, starring Patricia Arquette. Probably the best representation of normal conservative family life to appear on TV in decades, wrapped around generally interesting stories and mysteries. Unfortunately, it used the name of, and thereby leant totally unearned credibility to, a real-life so-called ‘psychic’.
If you watch the show though, you will not be surprised by Arquette putting in a good performance in a movie. While generally very competent, in a couple of episodes she was simply astonishingly good.
John Podhoretz mentioned that Obama is “good at elections but nothing else.” That thought had occurred to me as well. I sure hope it’s true. If Obama is a political genius that wins elections other horrible presidents wouldn’t be able to win, then that makes it less likely that America is lurching leftward, and more likely this is just an odd period in history where we happen to have a really awful president. In that case, if we just get through two more years of Obama, we can start to rebuild again. Maybe Obama is like the Mule from the Foundation series.
Timberlake did a phenomenal acting performance in a film called Alpha Dog a few years ago. I would recommend it to anyone.
We folks here at Ricochet realize you are all busy men, but wish we could have a little more political analysis. For example, I’d like you guys to opine on the pizza delivery boy here in NC drawing 7% of the vote [probably at least half of that is pissed off Tea Party folks] on the Libertarian line and thereby throwing our Senate seat to nothingburger Kay Hagan.
So in this great podcast, Mr. Podhoretz asks “What does it matter if the Republicans win the Senate?”
This right here is the primary reason why they need to win, to get rid of one Harry Reid….
