Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
Yep, it’s time for another jaunt through pop culture with the men of GLoP. But fair warning: we do discuss politics in this show, so if you are not interested in some Rank Punditry®, you can skip from 3:12 to 23:48 in this podcast. So let’s keep the garment rending in the comments to a minimum, deal? After the political talk, the guys cover a movies that are so bad, they’re good, John makes a bold statement about Jimmy Stewart’s performance in It’s A Wonderful Life, Jonah professes his love for a more recent Christmas movie, and Rob confesses to possibly causing bodily harm to a legendary comedian. Also, should Ph.D’s be called doctors? The GLoP-pers have thoughts. Leave yours in the comments below.

Rending. Rendering is a very different thing.
Not more Trump for crying out loud …. please! Can someone please listen for me and let me know if I will be able to bear it?
Either way, the point seems to be that any disagreement with the hosts of this podcast is unreasonable. I thought commenting on posts and podcasts was how one was supposed to use Ricochet; apparently I have been using the site incorrectly for the past decade.
It has gotten to the point where the condescending comments in the description are worse than the show itself.
This is so sad. Paraphrase: “We know most of you are going to hate everything we say for the first 20 minutes so please stick with us till we get past that section.”
Fixed. Thanks.
You must be new around here. But I agree with you 100%. Disagreement and debate is the DNA of this place. Or at least, it used to be.
Oh, I could paraphrase it differently, but then it wasn’t us who essentially demanded this disclaimer/warning. We’re just weary of the pages and pages of comments from listeners who apparently can only consume content that confirms or agrees with their self-selected narrative. But hey, different strokes.
They told you the time range to skip.
You can’t see how condescending so much of the podcast is?
Jonah Goldberg deeply underestimates Hillary Clinton trying to undermine the legitimacy of the 2016 election.
Or, perhaps the members are just weary of Jonah’s childish commentary about how Trump is orange, or has funny hair, or whatever other 5th-grade-level insults he chooses to hurl. There is plenty of room for substantive criticism of the President, but that is not what we get from this podcast. And, then if someone deigns to call out Jonah for his tiresome juvenile antics they are called “Trumpers” or some other pejorative by Blue Yeti and are told that they are unable to tolerate a difference of opinion.
I would agree that someone certainly is pushing a “self-selected narrative.”
I don’t think Jonah, Rob, or John have made fun of Trump’s complexion or his hair on this show (happy to be corrected on it, but I don’t think that’s the case). I do recall that Rob did a run on the President’s daily hair and make-up regimen, but that’s not really a joke — it’s observational. Everyone understands that there are many man-hours dedicated to making him look the way he does. Don’t they?
They have been been very critical of the President’s rhetoric, his personal behavior, and yes, some of his policies on a regular basis and did so again on this show for the first 20 minutes of it. Hence, the warning.
As for the 5th grade level humor, yes, there has always been some of that on this show. That’s in part who they are and we readily concede that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
In my recollection (and I have produced every single episode of this show), very few of those types of jokes were directed at the President. In general, they approached that topic pretty seriously — perhaps more seriously than they ought to on what is supposed to be a comedic show.
If you are not a fan of occasional juvenile humor (perfectly reasonable), then after 157 episodes, I’m not sure why you are still listening or why you expect them to suddenly change.
I regret that I have but one like to give.
Maybe the problem is that it isn’t so much about Pop Culture as it was claimed?
And the numbering gets farther off, since last time was also #156…
The first misnumbering was around #50 as I recall, which was never corrected.
To be honest, I have been as fan of GLOP since the beginning, but have skipped the past several episodes as Trump seems to have broken Jonah. I would have completely ignored this one as well had it not shown up in the main feed and featured your smug and condescending “warning” Perhaps I should have shown more restraint and not commented, but I find your sanctimonious approach to be particularly off-putting
Larger version, please! I want to save that!
Do I need to explain to you how to embiggen things?
I know how to stretch things, but they lose quality when you do that. Much better to have a larger original.
(That’s what SHE said!)
Hang on.
Is Jonah still arguing that the 90%-plus or whatever it is of Republicans who support Trump, are somehow the “outliers” and “minority of yahoos?”
Seriously (and not condescendlingly), quote the picture into the reply box. Click on the picture to bring up the menu. There will be a pencil icon on the menu. Click that icon. It will bring up a dialog box that includes a size drop-down menu. Choose a larger size from the menu. (The default on Ricochet is often “thumbnail.”)
So doesn’t Jonah and JPod tell us that we silo ourselves when it comes to news consumption (whether pop culture or otherwise) and now we get explicit warnings not to consume their views if we disagree with them.
How about we listen to them and voice our disagreements with them? No good?
If that’s just a display setting, and not how it was originally uploaded, then that’s a separate issue.
It is. That’s how I made it larger.
@roblong misstates the Constitutional issue. The Constitution doesn’t say that states set their own election procedures. It says the state LEGISLATURES set their election procedures. And that was exactly the issue: the state LEGISLATURES did not make the changes to election procedures that were being challenged.
In the customer service world we call this ignoring your customer complaints.
And JPod misstates things too. It’s not just about 12,000 votes in Georgia and 90,000 votes in Pennsylvania. It’s about 12,000 QUESTIONABLE votes (more, really) in Georgia and 90,000 QUESTIONABLE votes (more, really) in Pennsylvania.
You know, I honestly didn’t mean this to be smug or condescending, I meant it to be light-hearted and included the time code as a public service because it has been requested for a while now. I resisted doing it because I of course would prefer for the audience to listen to the whole show. A lot of effort goes into it, and it’s not meant to be consumed like a buffet. So against my own wishes, I did it anyway and it’s being taken as condescending. 🤷♂️
For the previous episode of GLoP, I wrote a completely generic show description and was roundly criticized for that too. Bottom line: There is literally no way to please everyone, so I should probably stop trying to please you. Or perhaps, caring.
Fact check: False. I just looked again to make sure, there are 11 comments, only one of which – #7 – might be taken as a criticism of your description, and that is just an “eye-rolling” photo.
Maybe you got emails too, but it might be best to stick to claims that have public evidence.
