Fan Service

It’s the end of the month and you know what that means: time for another contractually obligated episode of GLoP! This week, the guys are all over the map literally and figuratively. Just a smattering of the speaking scat demonstration in this show: Stripes, Roots, Cheers Babies, Stalin, Kim Jong-Un, Lawrence of Arabia, Mel Brooks, movies you’ve seen ten times or more, New York movies, and yes, Day of The Triffids.

Oh goodie, a movie list challenge.  I’ll set parameters for myself: no musicals or Christmas movies (so no Die Hard) and list only what comes to mind in 10 minutes.  Go- Yes, Donavon’s Reef! And Rio Bravo, Daktari,  Bob Hope’s My Favorite Blonde & Brunette, & Spy, The Uninvited, Ghost Breakers, the 30s and 40s The Saint series, Ghostbusters, Foul Play, Groundhog’s Day, Young Frankenstein, The Thin Man series, Lady of Burlesque, The Women, Fantastic Planet, Them, The Thing, The Blob, The Changeling, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Parent Trap, The Chalk Garden, The Truth About Spring, The Moon Spinners, Roger Rabbit, Franco Z’s Romeo and Juliet, Independence Day, The Terminator, Indiana Jones Arc and Last Crusade, LOTR and The Hobbit franchise (That’s a serious time investment but it doesn’t compare to the time spent reading them.)  My time is up. That was fun.

I barely scratched the surface.  I love all of these and have watched each 10Xs+ so there must be something wrong with me:) In my defense, I habitually multitask.

Regarding the way Bill Murray changes his character and becomes a better person, Quentin Tarantino just partially criticized this very fact in comparing Bill Murray and Chevy Chase movies, I guess just yesterday.

Fan service for sure.  Best Years of Our Lives after maybe 25 viewings the light sobbing starts in the opening credits.  Donovan’s Reef, Kelly’s Heroes, Groundhog Day, Philadelphia Story all on repeat for me as well.  Some I did not hear, Deer Hunter, Chinatown (like 50 times), and two Cohen Brother’s movies, Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski.  The Searchers and The Outlaw Josie Wales.  A baker’s ten.

The Changeling is the only horror movie I ever liked.

Alright I’ll bite. Many of the movies discussed in the podcast would be on my list, so I’ll go with other, maybe more personal favorites. In no particular order:

    Star Wars

Caveman!  (This one I probably saw 20 times, all before I was 12 years old. It may be the perfect kids comedy, even though I don’t think it was meant for kids)

    Lethal Weapon

Any of the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western trilogy

    The Usual Suspects

When I’m in a dark mood these movies always help: Yes! Donavon’s Reef.(It must be the South Seas). The Quiet Man (Miss O’Hara, please). The Thin Man(Miss Loy, wow). The Road to___?(always funny-if you’re old enough). The Pink Panther(Sellers and Niven-priceless).But if I’m feeling “put upon”, nothing gets the blood going like The Magnificent Seven. All worth review.

Perhaps Episcopalian Chase vs. Roman Catholic Murray. Albanian Belushi is another matter…

By the way, the previous GLoP “episode” titled “Fan Service” was December 10, 2019.

Dear me, how could I forget Cool Hand Luke, Crossing Delancy, Local Hero, and Animal House.  I must love Peter Riegert.  The Verdict, the Natural and Field of Dreams.  Fandango but I am from Texas of a certain age.  Been bugging me.

Tom S. (in case he google searches) was a good enough boss, but his comedy was always middlebrow.  Jim Carrey was far more of a beast to deal with than Tom.

Liar Liar was probably his best film vs. Ace Ventura, the Nutty Professor and Bruce Almighty.  Patch Adams he did as pure Oscar bait because he was tired of doing lowbrow films but like Ron Howard his tastes are pure tv movie of the week.

But he’s a nice guy who went crazy after the bike accident.  Decided to live in a trailer in  Malibu (still a million bucks).

Too bad he couldn’t get Jim Rockford’s deal.

Ricochet Audio Network: It’s the end of the month and you know what that means: time for another contractually obligated episode of GLoP!

And I know that there’s 10 days left to do TWO contractually obligated episodes for July.

We had one scheduled for yesterday and it got cancelled at the last minute for reasons we will discuss on the next GLoP, although I am not yet sure when that will be.
