It’s late in the month and that means it’s time for another romp through pop culture, ephemera, and tales of travel. This week: Rob has a Midnight Express moment, Jonah wants to check into a movie themed hotel, and John once had a girlfriend with a mysterious past.

I haven’t started the playback yet, but Jonah should look into the Berlin Hollywood Media Hotel, where every room is themed. It’s on the Ku-damm, the classy Fifth Avenue of formerly West Berlin.
It was built by a German film producer who spent decades making art films to make up for his more salacious films of the Sixties.
I guess they no longer have a two-episodes-per-month contract with advertisers.
The genius of writing on toilet paper is that it makes editing/rewriting a lot easier, on a square-by-square basis.
What about the hotel from the movie “Hotel?”
On the question of where to go with a time machine, consider pre revolution Cuba. I’d like to idle away an evening or two sipping on rum drinks with Hemingway and losing games of chance with gamblers who are on the run from the law.
I’m glad Podhoretz is easing so quickly into “it doesn’t matter how much you bug me, I won’t tell you my Thai ladyboy story.” Because frankly I never want to hear the story itself, but bugging him about it endlessly seems like a good time.
I’m tired of writers telling us how difficult writing is. You only work 4 hours a day. It’s a fun part time gig is what it sounds like.
Janet Leigh did not have good luck with hotels and motels. The Bates, and then there was Mirador Motel in Touch of Evil and another odd night manager in Dennis Weaver.
Peele also developed a recent Twilight Zone series that is really worth watching.
Isn’t that the one that’s just remakes of the previous shows but with black/latino actors?
They did re-use (and change) some themes such as the famous one with William Shatner. I didn’t notice the race of the actors. It is not woke.
Maybe they didn’t re-write the scripts in woke-ish, but the reason for re-doing the same stories with black and latino actors is itself woke.
Why do they all hate M*A*S*H? It’s one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, especially the early seasons with Henry Blake and Trapper John (although Charles Winchester was awesome too). Yes, Alan Alda eventually let his sanctimony get the better of him, but there was so much else to enjoy that it was easy to ignore him.
There was a lot to enjoy, but sometimes the cognitive dissonance around an 11-year sitcom set during a 2-year (for the US) war can be a little rough.
And how many times did they celebrate Christmas/New Year’s on the show, anyway?
Only 3 days remaining for a single “episode” this month.
Recording tomorrow!
I look forward to it.
