Alligator Meatballs

We’re back with another edition of the World’s Most Non-Partisan Podcast®. This week, some thoughts on Linda Hunt (the actess, not the character Tom Cruise plays in Mission Impossible), John is watching a documentary about a weird sex cult that includes obscure European royalty in its ranks, and deep dive into cooking shows, the movie Who Is Killing The Great Chefs of Europe, and why you should see it, that Karate Kid inspired Cobra Kai TV show, why shows about old England are the best –or the worst– depending on your point of view, and we remember the great American actor Paul “Bob” Willson, Bruce Babbit, and of course, Miss Bab.

JPod praises “Cobra Kai” for its different-ness without remembering what they talked about earlier:  that’s just what someone wrote.

Would any real-life situation turn out like that?

    Not very likely.

And at the end of the My Field Of Greens promo, JPod says “My Field Of Dreams.”

I did a commercial audition two years ago where I was paired with Paul Willson, I had the same reaction as JPod.  Very sweet man to indulge my fanboy until I got it together for the audition

I also think Paul should have had the last line on the Cheers finale.  IIRC there was a running joke where Paul wasn’t included in activities of the other regulars, and I thought when Sam turned off the lights, Paul should have emerged from the back and said “Ok I’m ready now”

To repeat, I expect a far more significant element to the success of Friends rather than Living Single, is that Friends was on NBC – HUGE audience – and Living Single was on Fox: SMALL audience.

Yeah, also at that point Queen Latifah was mostly only known as a rapper, so whites who didn’t listen to rap would have been indifferent to her being in the show.

Good show. Enjoyed it with all the stories of minor celebs, etc. Culture is what GLoP is good at.

Am I the only one who laughed out loud when Jonah talked about anti-Trump tv shows being “heavy-handed and thinking they’re clever, but not really clever”? Sounds like a good description of much of his writing since November 2016.

Always amazed at how much TV these busy guys watch. They’re obviously able to stretch time….or not sleep.

    Fun episode.

The Last Kingdom is indeed a good series.  James Delingpole and Toby Young turned me on to it months ago in one of their always entertaining and informative London Calling podcasts.  Having competed against Alfred University, which is named for Alfred the Great, for decades I’ve wondered what was so great about Alfred.  The Last Kingdom delivers.

I’m continually amazed at how often the hosts of the GLoP Culture podcast – that is dedicated to the popular culture – can’t recall the names of what they consider to be important, prominent aspects of the popular culture.

I think it’s also worth pointing out that a “season” of Cobra Kai is ten – TEN! – half-hour episodes.

    So freakin’ what?

Also, the Barney character in “How I Met Your Mother” thought the bad guy in Karate Kid was actually the good guy, etc, long before this series. (Which means the HIMYM writers made a show about it first.)  And bad guy William Zabka appeared at a surprise birthday (I think) party for Barney, to agree with him.

I APA-style cited this podcast for a Canvas class discussion forum I’m in. This is my second class for my MBA and it was my first academic citation of any podcast. So, you’re welcome.

The discussion was about how all we adults used Pandora until our teenagers used their amazing powers of whining and got us to convert to Spotify. Nobody could figure out why it was they (the kids) decided they had to have Spotify and it occurred to me that I have no idea, really, what ads my kids are seeing on TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, etc. My parents knew what ads I was seeing because the TV, magazines and newspapers were all right there in the living room.

This led me to talking about Rob’s comment about how Mom used to control the remote, then Friends happened.

Well, fine.  I spent several minutes screaming “The Battle of Maldon!  The Battle of Maldon! It was only Ethelred the Unready’s signature battle!” at the iPad. (What’s translated as “unready” should probably be “poorly advised.”).  Thank goodness you finally got it.

I recommend mixing Norsemen in with Vikings and The Last Kingdom.  It cuts the bitter aftertaste of violence and the gratuitous sex is even funnier.  It’s also slightly less weird than Comrade Detective, but still pleasantly strange.

I want to put in a word for The Last Kingdom (aka Warrior Chronicles) books by Bernard Cornwell.  After watching the series on Netflix, I started downloading the books on Audible and went through all (12 I think) of them that are out.  Great stories, especially if you find the period interesting.  From what I’ve read there’s one more coming soon and it’s supposed to be the finale.  Bonus Fact:  the author is apparently descended from the real ninth century Northumbrian lords of Bebbanberg that inspired the main character – Uthred.

Bonus bonus fact: Likely all of us with European blood are also descended from them.

Why on earth would we want to hear the GLoPsters discuss the debate?  According to their producer, GLoP has learned its lesson about talking Trump sucks everything he does is bad ignore Middle East peace ignore 3% unemployment ignore energy independence ignore war on oppressive regulation ignore pro-life/pro-2d Amendment/pro-religious liberty politics.

It’s a moot issue now (see my comment above), but rest easy folks: we were never planning to discuss the debate on this show. All three of them have other shows to do that kind of punditry on.

And yes, Trump is the greatest President in the history of the universe. That’s a given.

why shows about old England or the best

Maybe just fix the “show notes” – “why shows about old England ARE the best” – and call it a week?
