Decoding Evangelical Politics with Mike Cromartie

One of the surprises of the GOP primary campaign season was the strong support Donald Trump received from many—though not all—evangelical Christian voters. Maybe the so-called "religious right" isn't as monolithic as the media supposes. In this edition of the Power Line Show, Steve Hayward interviews one of the most insightful observers of the religious right, Michael Cromartie of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. We talk about theology, journalism, and also sports, since Mike was once the mascot of the Philadelphia 76ers NBA team.

Hosted by Steve Hayward, with guest MCMichael Cromartie

If I may be excused for recycling a post I put on the member feed this morning, it relates to the Trump & Evangelicals theme of the podcast, and some of the ins and outs of Evangelicaldom, which is anything but monolithic.

Fresh off a spirited re-litigation of the Nicene Creed regarding the person and work of the Holy Spirit (bet you thought that was all settled 1500 years ago), Wayne Grudem has published a two-part manifesto declaring that voting for Trump is a “Morally Good Choice.”

Grudem is a well-known theologian in Evangelical Protestant circles, professor of theology and biblical studies at Phoenix Seminary, and general editor of the English Standard Version Study Bible. Some might say all that is like being the best French restaurant in Rawlings, WY, but never mind, suffice it to say he is well-known in the circles he’s well-known in and his opinion carries some weight with some people (I tend to generally agree with him in his Trump assessment).

Other persons equally well-known in Evangelical Protestant circles have viciously lambasted him (at least lambasted him as viciously as things go in polite North American Evangelical Protestant circles).

Start your dive into this fascinating back and forth display of arcane, subterranean Evangelical Protestant inside baseball with this article in the Christian Post:

Grudem's piece also appeared on Townhall.com, the link is here if you want to get right to it.

Personal note: I’m still a reluctant Trump voter, mainly because I’m adamantly Never Clinton. I’m also inclined to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, a bridge Clinton burned long ago

TBH, not religious, but am with them culturally. I enjoyed this quite a bit. These one on one have been interesting.
