This morning as I was walking back from the pickleball courts, a young woman ran past me. She was wearing a small backpack that held water she could drink through a flexible tube. She was also wearing the brightest red shoes I had ever seen. I said to her as she went by, “Dorothy is going to want her shoes back.” She looked back at me as if I was crazy. I decided she was too young to have seen The Wizard of Oz.
When I take a long walk, I head to the Lake Worth fishing pier. I go down Lakeside Drive where my wife grew up. The 100-year-old homes are quite popular. During the days of George Floyd hysteria, many yard signs said “Hate has no place in this house,” or something like that. After the recent election, the only yard signs I see over there say “For Sale,” and there seem to be a lot of them.
My friend Jane sold a small house in a similar neighborhood for 2.4 million dollars before she moved to Oakland, CA to be closer to her children. Jane drives a Tesla. I told her before she left that she should get a Trump bumper sticker so she could tell which car was hers.
The bishop of the Diocese of Charleston, SC sent me a letter referencing the scandal involving Catholic charities. He affirmed that in his diocese, all people are welcome to the community and that the immigration status of people seeking help is not investigated, but US law will always be followed and every nation has a right to a secure border. Sounds about right to me. Refusing all government subsidies might be a better response.

Somehow, whenever I’ve seen the movie, those shoes never seemed particular bright/brilliant. Even actual ruby stones never “shone” unless they had a bright light behind them or something.
Ruby is a darker red, not a bright red.
The lady across the street had a “Hate has no home here” sign up. I considered countering with a “Now renting to Haters” advertisement.
In the original book, the slippers were silver.
I approve this policy.
Still very popular are the Trump signs and flags. I only ever saw two Demoncrap signs and they disappeared like overnight.
Edit: Right after the election.
Good to know.
And 5 inch stilettos, if I’m not mistaken . . .
Dorothy is quite young in the book. Closer to five than fourteen, if I remember.
Yes, the “Return To Oz” movie seemed to have been more faithful. Fairuza Balk as Dorothy was age 9 when the movie began production, 10 when production was finished, and 11 when released.
Every Sunday morning I share breakfast with a truly great man. He inspires me in many ways. Our friendship is based on a shared history as Clemson football fans and experiences in living in South Carolina for many years. We talk about political and cultural events that have emerged each week and we share a conservative perspective on those events. I shared this particular post with him because it fit with our conversation. He apologized before he read it because he said it takes a long time for him to read stuff. After he read it he said, “I like that. You present a coin with two sides. You describe one side and then at the end you flip the other side of the coin over.”
I have never thought about what I try to do when I write but I am going to stick with his analysis and enjoy it.
