Trump Hits 1,237

From the AP:

Donald Trump reached the number of delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination for president Thursday, completing an unlikely rise that has upended the political landscape and set the stage for a bitter fall campaign.

The good news for Trump, reported by The Associated Press after a nationwide survey of unbound delegates, was tempered by continuing problems for his campaign. Those include the abrupt departure of Trump’s political director and continuing resistance by many Republican leaders to declare their support for his upstart candidacy.

Trump was put over the top in the AP delegate count by a small number of the party’s unbound delegates who told the AP they would support him at the national convention in July. Among them was Oklahoma GOP chairwoman Pam Pollard.

“I think he has touched a part of our electorate that doesn’t like where our country is,” Pollard said. “I have no problem supporting Mr. Trump.”

It takes 1,237 delegates to win the Republican nomination. Trump has reached 1,238. With 303 delegates at stake in five state primaries on June 7, Trump will easily pad his total, avoiding a contested convention in Cleveland.

So wait, is he at 1237 bound or just 1237 declared?

Or bored resignation. Or prepping. There’s lots of possibilities. The possibility exists that he’ll turn out to be the best thing for the nation since Reagan. The possibility also exists that I’ll poop a solid gold brick and solve all my money problems this afternoon. Most likely outcome, however, is that the country continues its long slide into despotism.

Yawn about this, but I am pretty interested in what’s going on in Mitt Romney’s and Bernie Sanders’ minds right now.  A four-way race sounds pretty good.

I believe the last day to register as a candidate on the ballot in Texas has passed. So I wouldn’t hold up too much hope even if I did like the idea of a four-person race.

Bill Kristol thinks they could likely file a lawsuit and still get on the Texas ballot.   He’s putting the outside date for a 3rd party run at mid-June.   Still a long-shot though.

Bill Kristol and a lot of other people need to keep their noses out of Texas business and courts.

I don’t care if Ted Cruz suddenly decided to run an independent campaign. Texas did our part and that the rest of the country sans Oklahoma could care less about limited government and individual liberty isn’t our problem.

Yes, I’m sure you’re right about the rest of the country’s lack of commitment to liberty and limited government.  Unfortunately, their indifference to this effects us all.

Somehow I think there is plenty of chicanery yet afoot.

It ain’t over just because he won fair and square by the rules as they were in place…  If he won it means we need NEW rules, retroactively!

    I think you are correct.

If anyone is under delusion that they are going to do a roll call of delegates at the convention and a little old lady from New York is going to stand up and say “With the 1,237th vote cast from the great state of New York we are proud to nominate Donald Trump the next President of these United States!” (or some such malarkey) and then confetti rains down on the crowd as they sing God Bless America I think we are going to see something very different.

It ain’t over just because he won fair and square by the rules as they were in place… If he won it means we need NEW rules, retroactively!

I don’t know about retroactively, but if Ted Cruz gets his way 2020 will look much different than 2016 and don’t be surprised to see a President Trump get primaried and lose.

    Interesting.

I have to wonder just what Bill Kristol thinks of all the other laws planted think, from coast to coast, such that he wants to cut down the one that troubles him today.

I suspect he’d be just as eager to get chopping at all of them, if they inconvenience him, because his wants and desires plainly are supreme over the rule of law.

As the old saying goes a fish rots from the head down.

When I see this sort behavior from esteemed members of the political class such as Kristol it makes me think the Republic is already defunct.

When laws stand only until someone complains to a judge then we have no law at all, in my view.

Of course I shouldn’t assume that Kristol would succeed- but I’d give him a good shot. So I’ll conclude that the Republic can still be saved, despite this sort of talk, if only because the public at large can still vote to evict the our lawless political class from positions of power.

Hence, Trump. We’ll see if he does any better- but he sure seems to be collecting the right enemies.

Again, please consult things like simultaneous registration and Sore Loser laws. Bernie Sanders can only try an independent run in four states, one of those being Vermont. Another being New York.

And I’m pretty sure that if Mitt Romney was going to try this again, he’d have to get along without Texas, as the deadline for independent filing was on May 9.
