The Top 10 Best “Top 10 Best Lists of 2014” of 2014
The oldest trick in writing for the web is padding late December with plenty of “Best of the Year” lists. But with so many options, how do you decide which lists are worthy of your time? To help, I’ve compiled the Top 10 Best “Top 10 Best Lists of 2014” of 2014. Yeah, it’s kind of meta, but roll with it.
Pitchfork’s Best Albums and Tracks of 2014: The music site for smug hipsters has published a sea of Top 10 lists from their creatively pierced contributors. Get to know these bands before they sell out by moving to a major label.
Advertising Age’s Top 10 Ads: The leading ad mag pulled out their water-cooled abacus to determine the 10 TV commercials by estimated spending. (For better or worse, Trivago Guy made the cut.)
Hitfix’s Best Viral Videos of 2014: You probably already caught these on your aunt’s Facebook feed, but Hitfix lets you relive the cats, celebs and ice buckets all over again.
10 Outrageous ‘Zero Tolerance’ Follies of 2014: Our libertarian friends at Reason.com point out the worst excesses of snoops, nannies and bureaucrats.
Top 10 Fine Art Photos of 2014: There are several photojournalism and nature pic lists out there, but this is the only fine art list I’ve come across. Photoshopping ahead!
Top 10 Best Movie Trailers of 2014: As a dad to tween girls, I don’t see many movies that aren’t produced by Disney or Pixar. This list of movie trailers fits better with my viewing patterns and family budget.
Dezeen’s Top 10 Houses of 2014: When I’m not writing, eating or napping (~30 min. per day), I’m picking modernist dream homes for when I get all that Nigerian prince money I’ve been promised. Dezeen’s got the goods.
Top 10 NFL Plays of 2014: Surprisingly, this video list features some players other than Odell Beckham, Jr.
Top 10 Feminist Fiascoes of 2014: This has been a great year for female achievement and a horrible year for feminists (those facts might be related). In the pages of the L.A. Times, Charlotte Allen compiles the biggest fails of the sisterhood.
The World’s Best Single Malts of 2014: Sure, this list includes more than 10 whiskeys, but they lost count after the first seven drams.

This is trick much older than the Internet. It’s even older than the guy who invented the Internet.
The Trivago guy creeps me out.
Worst 2.0 Web site launch of 2014….the envelope please….
What a year. There were so many “top 10 things that will kill us all and destroy the Republic” lists in 2014, you could write a new one every day. I think, in fact, that’s Newsmax’s business model.
My all time favorite, of course, was Ebola. I don’t know how I survived. It was a miracle.
Did anyone else survive Ebola?
J’adore Gronkowski from my beloved Pats and am learning to love Marshawn Lynch from the Seahawks, but I think all fans know we have to vote for Beckham. He truly made some history here.
That viral video of Louis saying no one who is at the Actors’ Studio listening to Sean Penn will be a big star… Perfect.
Maybe the launch isn’t finished yet. You may have to wait until 2015 or beyond.
My favorite Top 10: Republicans pick up 9 senate seats, + Harry Reed is no longer controlling the Senate – Yea
What? No top ten list of the best Ricochet member posts? You could give the winners a free coffee mug – autographed by Jon Gabriel himself!
Jon – thanks for this!
Thanks, John. I just wasted an hour, and enjoyed every minute of it.
I love even bad top ten lists, and these are good ones.
I think you win!
