The Libertarian Podcast: “Educating Richard Epstein”

God help the poor souls, but once upon a time there were a number of individuals who had to teach Richard Epstein. In this unusually biographical episode of The Libertarian, Richard traces his intellectual formation, discussing the teachers, books, and thinkers that most shaped the classical liberal perspective for which he has become famous. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering “How did this guy get this smart?” — Well, the answers lie within.

No matter what anyone says, I will continue to believe that Prof. Epstein sprang full-grown from the head of Zeus.

Despite the very disturbing image engendered, I hold to the “arose buck-naked from the sea foam” view on the matter.  Philosophy has two roots in it after all.

Man, but that’s not even the most troubling thing about Aphrodite’s birth.   I think I’ll fall back quickly on “After birth in a cave in Arcadia, Richard travelled to Thessaly where he stole his brother Apollo’s cattle.”  Yes, much better.  Commerce and communication.  Apt.  Not terrifying.  Much better.

Any time I start to think I’m an undiscovered and unappreciated genius, I listen to the professor and I realize I know absolutely nothing.

Thank you for speaking to us about these things, Professor; it is most generous.
