Join Jim and Greg as they breathe a sigh of relief that a rail workers strike is averted, although they’re curious to see the terms of the agreement. They also sigh as Biden again claims costs are going down as he hails the announcement. They’re also pleasantly surprised to see New York Times columnist Tom Friedman scolding the left to get serious about fossil fuel production as a way both to help Europeans in the face of Putin cutting off natural gas and for the U.S. to produce energy at levels that renewables cannot possibly match. Then they roll their eyes as the left freaks out over red state governors sending a few migrants to blue parts of the country but as no interest in dealing with the thousands of people crossing our southern border illegally every day. Finally, they remember former Independent Counsel Ken Starr and how the Democrats and the media turned him into a villain for investigating the unconscionable conduct of President Clinton.

Jim & Greg welcome the return of in-person schooling to Chicago after a four-day hissy fit from the Chicago Teachers Union. They also sigh as President Biden reportedly makes no progress in trying to deter Russian military action in Ukraine. And the Biden administration gets caught flat-footed again as out supply chain problems grow.

Mi Abuela and the Toll of Unions

At four-foot-ten and 60-something, as always she greeted me with a warm smile, two lattes in her hands and her signature “hellooo Meester David.” I never ask her for the high end “rainforest” coffee for me and my colleague to give us the energy boost before we start our seminar, yet, each month she greets us in our hotel boardroom with a genuine desire to make sure I am happy.

We discuss her daughter’s new beau, her grandson’s soccer games and what’s new with my own sons. Yet on Saturday, the normal gleam in her eye was missing. Her open heart betrayed that she was covering up a sadness. I asked, “what’s wrong, everything ok?” After a pause, she looked around as if she was to impart what happened to D.B. Cooper. “Aww, Meester David…” tears welled up “I need a new job. I now to sell my house. There is no money here anymore. So very slow.”

I just finished running a series of seminars we do for my business, something we have done for 25 years. We frequent a high-end boutique brand owned by a large hotel chain (rhymes with Chariot). The hotel sent our recent BEO for my signature and reviewing it I noticed the cost for using the exact same boardroom with the exact same “AV equipment” skyrocketed (AV = television screen/monitor attached to the wall which we hook up to our computer). The charge for the boardroom would stay the same, but we would now incur a fee to “use” the TV. The additional cost would be 175 percent of the room fee, daily. For just one day of using the flatscreen, we could buy a couple of decent new TVs and we are there multiple days. My eyes Marty Feldman-ed. It’s not hard to do the math why mi abuela is about to be out of work.

Item: Seattle passes law letting Uber, Lyft drivers unionize My first reaction was that both companies should say “goodbye Seattle, enjoy your taxi rides”. However, that’s unlikely – Seattle is a city that’s far too “techie”/”hipster” for either company to be able to bail out. Also, there would be an awful backlash in the court […]

So I stole most of that head line, but this is an interesting article.  There’s enough background in the article so you won’t have to search the internet for the back story of LA’s theatre union woes. I’m interested to hear from the Libertarians (you’ll know the line in the article when you get to […]

It seems that every time I write something for Ricochet, my thoughts are bent towards the job market, the economy, or Labor and Union issues. I’m afraid that this time is no different. I’ve written before about how my conservative principles are often at conflict with the labor market that I work in.  This is […]

Pro-Labor Media Group Resists Own Staff’s Unionization — Jon Gabriel

Media Matters for America is quick to mock and even invent hypocrisy by conservatives. For some reason, they are less vocal about the myriad controversies engulfing their side. Especially when their own group is directly involved.

The Democrat-loving purple shirts of the Service Employees International Union wants to unionize the far-left staff of MMFA. Should be a slam dunk, right? But it seems that David Brock, Eric Boehlert, et al., are not so keen on living out their pro-labor ideology:
