A hallmark of the Obama presidency has its singular combination of busybodying and incompetence. Micromanaging the private health insurance market, prescribing healthy diets for our children, making pizza shops list calorie counts — all while veterans die waiting for government healthcare. The Secret Service creates ever-larger protective zones, causing untold problems for the public — […]

In 2016 when other presidential candidates seemed to be just getting their footing in social media no one has taken over Twitter like Republican presidential front runner Donald J. Trump. It’s hard to see how Trump’s aggressive, compulsive, distracting, and at times attacking tweeting nature hasn’t changed the way political campaigns will be run forever. […]

Promoted from the Ricochet Member Feed by Editors Created with Sketch. Twitter: Where Everyone Is Social, Except Campaigns

political twitterTwo weeks ago I started this series on how candidates and campaigns were missing the boat by forgetting the “social” in social media. Last week I used Snapchat as an example of how the Presidential campaigns were failing, and boy, are they ever failing there.

This week we are going to look at everyone’s favorite social media playground, Twitter. I want to focus mostly on some things a congressional candidate could be doing to make Twitter a tool for engagement instead of another megaphone.

imageBack when I was moonlighting as a Pinkerton security guard in 1976 or 1977, there was some labor trouble at the manufacturing plant where I worked. I don’t recall the exact order in which things happened, but the workers replaced the UAW with the Teamsters in an acrimonious process, and a Teamsters guy came to help them conduct negotiations for a new contract.

One night, when things had been getting heated, my supervisor stopped by at the beginning of my shift and told me what had happened during the day. Congressman Rick Nolan, a leftwing Democrat, had made an appearance at the plant to insert himself into the process. The plant manager accosted him, asking “What the hell are you doing here?” and ordered him off the property.

Recently, Jon Gabriel, Ed. posted the thread “Is Twitter ‘Shadowbanning’ Conservatives?” Not soon after, last night in fact, Twitter suspended the account of journalist Robert Stacy McCain. And now, Twitter is on fire with the tag #FreeStacy. The site Ralph Retort posted McCain’s response this morning –  More

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Is Twitter “Shadowbanning” Conservatives?

I spoke with OAN host Liz Wheeler about the allegations that Twitter is silencing many of its users. Milo Yiannopoulos, editor of Breitbart Tech and frequent guest of Ricochet’s own Radio Free Delingpole, revealed that the financially troubled social platform is using a technique called “shadowbanning” to limit the reach of accounts that promote a non-PC message:

According to the source, Twitter maintains a ‘whitelist’ of favoured Twitter accounts and a ‘blacklist’ of unfavoured accounts. Accounts on the whitelist are prioritised in search results, even if they’re not the most popular among users. Meanwhile, accounts on the blacklist have their posts hidden from both search results and other users’ timelines.

Taking a time out from yesterday’s sports holy day, I had to point out that our friends at NARAL dutifully used their tweet to let us know which Super Bowl commercials were acceptable to enjoy (along with tips on how to enjoy them). They obviously long for a regime where they’d perform this function in an official, government-sanctioned capacity backed by force of law but, until then, they can practice. Here’s the commercial that earned their ire:

When I got to that point in the Ricochet sign-up I had to stop and think. You see, I know how the Internet works. Every single employer I get from now to forever will google my name and see it associated with right wing ravings. Never mind that I don’t actually rave often; employers are […]

My title is an exaggeration, but it is based on this article in N.R.: Islam and Twitter The Saudis have been investing in media and web sites with the apparent intent to smother criticism of Islam or sharia law. Combine this with the extreme political correctness that already is dominant in Reddit, Facebook etc, and the […]

Howdy, folks. If you’re on Twitter, and you would like others to know your handle over there, you can publish it here. This post will be marked non-promote, but that’s only a convenience setting — there is actually no security on the internet. So don’t share what you can’t bear, but if your (selected) identity […]

Donald Trump is not exactly the kind of person you would think would connect with the Millennial Generation, unless perhaps you go by the theory that he is the type that tends to be most popular among those who haven’t seen his act before. And yet, if you’ve been paying attention to conservative political social […]
