Contributor Post Created with Sketch. A Progressive Asks a Clarifying Question

Friday’s adventures in Twitterland was consumed with President Trump’s decision to reverse the Obama Administration’s inclusion of transgender individuals serving in the military. One woman from California asked me the following:

David French of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America discuss President Trump’s executive orders that scrutinize the amount of land designated as national monuments and Obama-era restrictions on offshore drilling. They also groan as it looks like the update health care bill is also struggling to find the votes to pass. And they take aim at the ACLU for suing a Catholic hospital for refusing surgery for a transgender patient.

The title above was not a headline in the National Enquirer; it was the title of an Ask Amy column, from March 9. In reading the column I shifted between shock and confusion; the letter writer was in distress because her son’s decision to become pregnant as a transgender male had created a rupture in her family that she didn’t know to heal.

I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I know that gender and sexual identities have been tampered with and distorted for many years, but I wondered: how in the world does a transgender man become pregnant, and more importantly, how does this kind of insanity take place in today’s society?

Greg Corombos of Radio America and David French of National Review applaud Pres. Trump for planning to modernize and upgrade America’s nuclear arsenal. They also discuss the complexities of repealing Obamacare as former House Speaker John Boehner says it will never happen. And they react to CNN’s Chris Cuomo accusing dads who don’t want their 12-year-old daughter to share locker rooms with biological males of being “overprotective and intolerant.”

transgenderI often visit kottke.org, a blog ran by Jason Kottke. He’s a typical brain dead liberal, but I usually choose to just ignore the annoying progressive garbage posts and look at the posts where he’s linking to genuinely interesting (and non-political) videos and stories. Anyhow, visited today and saw this image.

So National Geo’s next issue will be all about “evolving” notions of gender and include pics of 80 different 9-year old transgender kids, such as the one featured on the cover. Jason Kottke is, unsurprisingly, happy and excited. PJ Media is less thrilled (and I’ll direct you to them if you’d like more details about the issue beyond what I give).

How about that caption on the cover: “The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy.” I no longer have to pretend to have the X and Y chromosomes and male genetic coding that I do in reality have, but…you know what I mean! They not only want to change what the words “boy” and “girl” mean, they want to change the meaning of “pretend” as well. It never ceases to amaze me how the Left, who claims to be the ones who are all about science, can engage in this kind of sophistry and expect that everyone will get on board.

On September 27, 2016, Jordan B. Peterson, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto, posted a video to his popular YouTube channel that set off a firestorm of controversy. The video, entitled “Professor against political correctness. Part 1: Fear and the law,” was a departure from Peterson’s usual content of recorded lectures, debates, and […]

One of the core principles of the cultural left is dissatisfaction. Perhaps “destructiveness” would be a more apt term. It would be easy to characterize this dissatisfaction/destructiveness as merely objecting to the principles that made the United States a great nation. And, of course, there is much of that in left-leaning ideology. As I discussed […]

In a sampling of recent news stories, Richard Epstein tackles the NLRB’s ruling allowing graduate students to unionize, a federal judge’s injunction against the Obama Administration’s transgender restroom regulations, and a move to restore voting rights for ex-cons in Virginia.

In America’s Hat, they want to send people who aren’t onboard with Transgender Political Correctness to prison for a couple of years. You only get six months in jail in Canada for killing a moose out of season, so they are obviously pretty serious about this. Hurting a gender appropriator’s feelings = four dead moose. […]

I’m no Thomas Sowell, but here are a few of my own (much less pithy or clever) random thoughts the passing education policy scene:

(The New York Times is reporting this, but I can’t get a working link.) Somehow, this is the one that pushes me over the line. It’s not that I worry for my elementary-school daughter; it’s the flagrant violation of federalism, a big step forward in Obama’s practice of rule by decree, and that need to […]

As I was listening to the GLoP podcast, it occurred to me that no one talks about non-transgendered women going in mens’ rooms. That’s when it hit me. Ladies, when the line to the ladies’ room is out the door and the men have none, go in the mens’ room. If challenged, declare “I feel […]

Promoted from the Ricochet Member Feed by Editors Created with Sketch. A (Genuinely) Modest Proposal on North Carolina’s Bathroom Law

shutterstock_409315246As a North Carolinian and sometime professional person, I have had the chance to see both sides of the now globally notorious Bathroom Debate of 2016. At a gender studies conference I attended, the host urged audience members to go into “whatever bathroom you like.” But at local church and school events, I’ve personally heard great praise for “the bravery of our state legislature.”

If you get past the polemics and invective, you can hear the basic arguments on either side. The backers of the law are worried about creeps going into girls’ bathrooms with impunity. Having a daughter, I sympathize with that view. The opponents feel that transgender people don’t deserve to be stigmatized when they need to go to the bathroom like everyone else. I used to have a boss who read that the real business of America was conducted in the men’s room and — considering himself a real businessman — would try to discuss quarterly targets at the urinal, so I understand how the trans-folks feel on some level too.

I hate to say it, but Governor Pat McCrory and legislature brought this on themselves with sloppy legislating. First, the bill included an unrelated provision (that McCrory has now said should be repealed) that eliminates the right for anyone to bring a discrimination action in state court. One could still bring an action in federal court. All good conservatives are also good federalists so, as a good conservative, I would rather these cases tried by a North Carolina judge than a federal one. That’s better for the plaintiff, the defense, and for justice.

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. This Week in Federal Regulatory Takeover

“As the presidential primaries dominate the news, under the radar the Obama administration continues its unilateral assault on the economy and civil society. Consider the news from just this week.” So I wrote last month. Is it poor form to start a new post with exactly the same opening?

1. Yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration announced that they will extend tobacco regulations to e-cigarettes:

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Hands Off the Ladies’ Rooms

gender-neutral-bathroomIf it concerns sex in any way, you can be sure that our culture will fixate on it and manage to defy common sense with hyperventilating indignation. Same sex marriage roiled the waters for decades, but now that the Supreme Court has big-footed that question, culture warriors are prowling for new realms of transgression to embrace. So, coming to a bathroom near you – transgenderism.

I’m just back from a weekend at Harvard University where unisex bathrooms are the norm. On behalf of womankind, I say: To the Bathroom Barricades!

Bathroom injustice has been a feature of the world for a very long time. Ask any woman. Most buildings feature equal-sized bathrooms for the two sexes – an automatic disadvantage for women who cannot use urinals (at least as of this writing). At every concert, stadium, lecture hall, or large meeting room, the line for the ladies’ room will usually curl out the door and around corners while the men breeze through their facility with assembly line efficiency. The only building in Washington, DC I know of where this is not the case is Constitution Hall, built by and for the Daughters of the American Revolution. Constitution Hall has twice the number of women’s bathrooms as men’s. Revolutionary indeed.

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. The Battle for the Bathrooms

gender-neutral-bathroomShould you conform to the world’s reality, or should the world conform to yours?

That’s the question at the heart of the debate over transgender rights and the spate of “bathroom bills” it has spawned in cities and states around the country. Citing privacy and safety concerns, supporters of these bills want to enshrine in law something that in any other moment in human history would have been viewed as elemental common sense—boys must use the little boy’s room, girls must use the little girl’s room.

Not so fast, Bigoty McBigotface.
