Return to Cash?

 

Will a significant portion of the American public soon return to using old-fashioned cash currency, driven by some combination of merchant fees on card transactions or concern about government monitoring of personal activity and possible retaliatory consequences?

I first saw a “convenience fee” (1% – 3%) added to credit card and debit card transactions at local businesses (mostly restaurants) during the 2020 Covid-oriented restrictions on businesses. OK. I understand. The business is desperately trying to cope with the shock of the sudden loss of revenue.

You are excused if you missed this story. “PayPal Partners With ADL (Anti-Defamation League) To ‘Fight Extremism And Hate’ By Researching, Disrupting Payments,” screamed the headline from Daily Caller, a conservative news site created by Fox News’ Tucker Carlson (he no longer controls it).

Perhaps you ignored it or drew a yawn from you. After all, you may have a Pay Pal account that has never had a problem and aren’t aware of ADL’s hard-left political activism. You may want to pay attention, especially if you’re a conservative who uses credit cards for certain contributions (such as the NRA) or purchases (like, purchasing a weapon for self-defense. And a lot of people are).

Most Americans in the lower 48 states are fed a steady diet of COVID news and scaremongering, with the never-ending debates over “lockdown” (read: Democratic) states, like Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, California, and Pennsylvania; versus “free states” (read: Republican) like Texas, Florida, and, to varying degrees, most everyone else.

Being overlooked is the State of Hawaii. It “reopened” to tourists on or about April 5th. They’re not making it easy to visit. And it’s complicated by a surge in new cases, not unlike other lockdown states. And it might make other lockdown states jealous.
