John Mearsheimer gave a talk about the situation in Ukraine on Monday, May 22.  For those of you who may not know, Mearsheimer is a professor of political science at the University of Chicago, and may be the most distinguished academic of the “realist” school in the world today.  Here’s the video, which is about […]

As far as I can tell, the bulk of the fighting in Ukraine has been centered on the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut for many months.  The initial Russian attack on Bakhmut started in August 2022. By around February 1, the Russians had partially encircled Bakhmut, and have been gradually advancing in the city itself, […]

It appears that the Russians may be on the verge of a breakthrough in Donetsk Oblast, specifically at the city of Bakhmut.  Bakhmut has been the site of ongoing conflict for many months. As usual in this war, I find it difficult to find reliable information on the current status of the battle around Bakhmut.  […]

Autumnal Anxieties in Allemagne…

…better known as Germany around these parts. It starts like this:

We’ve been back in the Federal Republic now for most of a month, and the anxious mood of the country seems to have gotten worse. Before the headlines here were taken over by news of Queen Elizabeth’s death and of the startling Ukrainian successes in the Russo-Ukrainian war (update as of September 12th, here), the newspaper headlines were filled with stories about the impending wave of price increase for everything from foodstuffs to soaps to clothing, all driven  by the continuing price increases in the energy sector. The war and the energy prices are of course related, and those who laughed when Donald Trump warned Europeans against relying on the regime of Vladimir Putin for their supplies of natural gas are finding out now just how appalling crow really tastes when it is served up cold. It tastes like the fear of pensioners who quite legitimately think that their government is going to force them to choose between food and heat this winter.

Jordan Peterson has a video explaining his thoughts about the war in Ukraine.  Some of you may find it interesting.  This appears to be an audiovisual version of an article that he published at the Daily Wire, which is linked in the video notes, but which is behind a paywall.  The video is about 50 […]

I write in response to David Carroll’s interesting post today, Understanding Russia Doesn’t Equate to Praise.  I think that David makes some good points, though he does condemn Russia’s invasion as “unjustified,” a point that doesn’t seem relevant to the arguments presented in the post. I’m going to set forth some of my thoughts.  I imagine […]

For some weeks now, I’ve heard allegations about neo-Nazis in Ukraine, including some group called the Azov Battalion.  Among other things, this seems to be part of Putin’s argument in support of the Russian invasion.  It may or may not be true.  I’ve never been to Ukraine, and never talked to any Ukrainian about anything […]

I came across this article today (March 16) in the Financial Times, reporting on negotiations between the Russians and the Ukrainians.   The article claims to be based on reports from “three people involved in the talks,” and includes a quote from Mykhailo Podolyak, identified as a senior advisor to Zelensky.  As usual, I cannot vouch for […]

A Global Recession by Official or Private Boycott?

The economic consequences of the Russo-Ukrainian war are beginning to make themselves felt, I think.  Many commodity prices are up, most notably gas and oil.  If this persists, it seems likely to me that it will trigger a global recession. I’m reminded of Thomas Sowell’s famous dictum, “there are no solutions, only trade-offs.”

Here’s a graph of oil prices (Brent) over the past year, from Business Insider (note that this graph exaggerates the increase because the bottom of the graph is at $60 — sorry about that, it’s not my graph).

I listened to the Ricochet podcast yesterday with John O’Sullivan.  It was a good discussion.  Thanks to Rob, Peter, and Blue Yeti for bringing this to us. I do have a question for O’Sullivan.  Perhaps there’s a chance that he’ll answer — if not, perhaps some of you could help. Preview Open

Nuclear Rumors from Ukraine

This is a brief compilation of a couple of different rumors I’ve heard out of the Ukraine war and what they mean. Now I don’t know much but I know a little bit about nukes and how they work and some of these things are flat out implausible. What I’m looking to give here is a quick reality check to see if any given statement is worth worrying about further. To be clear I’m talking about science; whether or not Putin is willing to deploy tactical nuclear weapons is beyond the scope of this post. Let’s get down to it.

Increasing Radiation levels at Chernobyl

The Claim: In the first day or two of the war the Russians attacked and took Chernobyl. The fight kicked up a lot of dust. The Ukrainian government’s automated radiation monitoring says the background radiation there jumped from 3,000 nSv/hour to 65,500 nSv/hour. Claim found in this video, though I’ve heard it elsewhere too.

This is an update to my post exactly one week ago, which gave my preliminary analysis of the invasion of Ukraine, based on the first apparently reliable map that I’d seen.   I found a new map source which looks credible, though I can’t vouch for it.  It’s from  the Critical Threats Project at the American […]

I’ve been writing some things about the situation in Ukraine that are, shall we say, not very popular with some of you. I see a number of claims that Putin is a madman, and that Putin has ambitions of restoring the Soviet empire in eastern Europe.  I am very skeptical of these claims, though I […]

I found a story in the Daily Mail UK (here), with what looks like very bad news for Ukraine in general, and Kiev in particular. The story reports a Russian military convoy approaching Kiev from the north, 40 miles long.  Not 40 miles away.  40 miles long. Preview Open

I’m going to set forth my speculations about Putin’s goals, strategy, and tactics in Ukraine.  I’m pretending to be Vlad for a day. My assumption is that the Russian forces will prevail in Ukraine, probably in the next week or two.  My impression, discussed at my prior post today, is that the Russians are winning.  […]

Today, I was finally able to find a few good maps, purporting to show the advance of Russian forces in Ukraine.  I cannot vouch for the accuracy of these maps.  I am going to use one from Reuters (link here).  This one is pretty consistent with several others, from Washington (WaPo, here) to London (BBC, […]
