Norm MacDonald, #MeToo, and the Fatal Flaw in the New Morality

Twitter is a cesspool. As if we needed more evidence, legendary comedian and acclaimed author Norm MacDonald was targeted for saying words to a reporter that a microscopic minority of humorless scolds didn’t care for. That’s all the pretext needed to subject a person, famous or not, to Twitter’s two-hour hate.

The Hollywood Reporter interviewed MacDonald on Tuesday to preview his upcoming Netflix show. The affable Canadian politely spoke his mind. For better or worse, his mind works differently than the rest of ours, which is one of the reasons he’s so funny.

Here are the meager examples of MacDonald’s wrongthink:

Jim and Greg are both on vacation this week. They will be back June 25th. There will new episodes with guest hosts Thursday and Friday of this week. Today, please enjoy an encore presentation of the Three Martini Lunch.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America serve up only good martinis today, although the last one comes with a twist. They cheer Congress and President Trump for enacting “Right to Try” legislation, allowing terminally ill patients to undergo promising treatments not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration. They also get a lot of enjoyment out of the excerpt from an upcoming HBO documentary that shows Obama Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes truly speechless after Donald Trump was declared the winner on Election Night 2016. And just two days after ABC fired Roseanne Barr for her horrible tweet about Valerie Jarrett, Samantha Bee puts the left on the spot after using a vile word to describe Ivanka Trump.

Honoring Samantha Bee

Tonight the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS, or SATAN spelled backwards) will honor Samantha Bee during their 11th Annual Television Academy Honors. This is one day after Miss Bee referred to the President’s daughter — on air — as “a feckless [expletive that refers to a part of a woman’s anatomy].”

Bee, and her network TBS, have tepidly apologized for the remark. “I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it,” tweeted Bee. The network added, “Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night. Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

And it truly was a team effort. Turner has a Standards and Practices Office like the broadcast nets. All scripts, monologues, etc., are run through this office. (Listen to the GLoP episode at AEI.) Which means Bee’s comments were not on par with Roseanne Barr’s spur-of-the-moment idiocy on Valerie Jarrett. No, this makes it 10 times worse. It was conceived in a writer’s room, approved by executive producers and blessed by the network itself. Jim Spann, the head of S&P for Turner Entertainment Networks, once appeared on “Conan” to defend his office’s censoring of some of that show’s content.

Welcome to the Harvard Lunch Club Political Podcast number 177 it’s the Emotional Support Podcast because, you know, everyone needs a little emotional support from time to time and we, yes *we*, you HLC Podcast comfort animals radio host Todd Feinburg and nanophysicist Mike Stopa are here to provide it. We will give you the emotional support you need and, face it, that you so richly deserve.

We will discuss, naturally, emotional support animals (other than ourselves). Is the whole thing a fad? Is it getting out of hand? Is it just more Randian victimhood splattering on our enfeebled, moocher culture? We will discuss.

ABC Cancels Roseanne After Racist Tweet

If you’ve ever encountered Roseanne Barr on Twitter, you know she is a bit … off. She regularly shares insane musings, personal attacks, and conspiracy theories that would make Alex Jones think the chemtrails finally got her. Roseanne’s always been this way, regularly attracting attacks from the left, right, and center. (Remember the conservative reaction to her ugly rendition of the National Anthem?) On Tuesday, she stepped in it big time with a tweet so bad that ABC cancelled her hit sit-com reboot hours later.
