“What % do you think of the Georgia electorate or maybe the American electorate is delusionally clinging to this set of even more ludicrous and outlandish conspiracy theories to protect their very fragile snowflake-like affection for a president who lost a fair election?”–Ricochet co-founder, Rob Long, Ricochet podcast, Episode 523 (~20-minute mark). Thanks, neighbor.  NY […]

As the country is rocked by the death of Mr. George Floyd and the resulting civil disorder, Dave hears from two people with crucial front row seats.  First, Ricochet Co-Founder Rob Long calls in from New York City to share what he’s seen downtown and what he sees in the country at large. Then, Ricochet Member Duke Powell calls in from Minneapolis to talk about what happened to George Floyd. Mr. Powell has 36 years of EMS experience, and he retired from the same agency that responded to Mr. Floyd on that awful day. Mr. Powell shares with Dave what protocols should have been followed and where he believes events took a fatal turn.

Finally, if you’re listening to Dave’s show, but you’re not a Ricochet member, there is a way you can get a 30 day free trial membership . Tune in to learn more!

This has been an interesting time, forced to make do at home. Fortunately, I am able to continue teaching my math classes online by utilizing Screencast-O-Matic, YouTube, and Zoom. So far, my students have not lost any precious geometry and calculus content! I don’t think I could have successfully taught my students remotely just a […]

Rob Long’s Data-Driven Utopian Dream

In the first 15 minutes of the latest Ricochet podcast (Episode #483), Rob said a couple of things that caught my attention. At one point, when talking about our communication- and data-centric technical culture, he suggested that the answers to all our big problems were probably in the wealth of data we’ve collected.

What came to my mind when he said that was the movie WarGames (1983), in which a wayward defense computer is discouraged from initiating Armageddon when it crunches the numbers and concludes that there’s no way to win a nuclear war. Setting aside the question of whether or not that’s a correct conclusion (and I recently re-re-re-watched Dr. Strangelove, in which Buck Turgidson makes a compelling contrary argument, so I’m really not so sure), what the computer in WarGames did was reach a kind of meta-conclusion. A thorough examination of the available information suggested that no good answers could be found.

Okay, so I had an idea.  It doesn’t seem like the Long Poll questions are blowing anybody away. I’ve seen a lot of comments suggesting what the question should’ve been or why the available answers are poor, etc. And as it happens, to the right of Long is Peter Robinson. I know Peter’s questions are […]

Reality TV sucks. It is spent, like the line of Gondor’s kings. I also think that this is true for TV and Film. The effects are better than ever, but I have doubts about the “Golden age” of TV. Also, Since Rob is doing pitches, I’d like to offer an idea that he might use, […]

Listening to the Ricochet podcast today I was struck by the appalling reality that Rob doesn’t presently have a hit show on the air.  Nature abhors a vacuum and so its up to the Ricochet readers to jointly assemble a show for Rob whether he needs it or not. We’ll need some ideas to get […]

Welcome to the Harvard Lunch Club Podcast for July 11, 2017 it’s the Long Never Trump edition of the podcast with our special guest Rob Long (or as we call him at Ricochet, The Big Cheese)!

As the followers of this podcast know, we are (often enthusiastic) supporters of the President and have been since before the Republican primaries began. We recognize the strange aspects of his personality and the absurdity of some of his PR, but we don’t think that particularly undermines the policies of the administration.

Pardon the sensational headline.  The truth is that I have tremendous respect for Rob Long and the entire Ricochet team.   It’s just that I cant help to recall Dick Morris during the 2012 Campaign telling us that he knew exactly how the election would turn out and he was so wrong.  Rob was just […]

It’s the Harvard Lunch Club Political Podcast for August 30, 2016, the “What? Rob Long Again!?” edition of the HLC Podcast. The Ricochet co-founder (@roblong) and former executive producer of Cheers joins us and updates us (with not so subtle “I-told-you-so’s”) on the sinking of the S.S. Trump. Blub, blub, blub. Mike valiantly argues: “it’s a binary election there are only two choices” and “who cares whether you can look your daughter in the eye after voting” and “are you kidding!? we’re talking about Hillary as the alternative!” And Rob’s riposte is: blub, blub, blub.

Rob is of the opinion that Donald Trump is an irredeemable reprobate with a grandiosity complex and sociopathic tendencies. It’s hard to argue given the hole we seem to be in.
