I love the Ricochet community but I just canceled my membership (effective Jan 15) for now. This is the Tweet that pushed me over the edge: More

Reading the latest news, it seems that it may- at times – become important to erase one’s social media history. That made me think – in case of an emergency, how would I quickly erase my Ricochet history? Asking for a friend. More

This is a good pitch. In order to make this happen, (& I think the founders have acknowledged this) Ricochet needs to expand the style of programming available. And in order to make THAT happen, Ricochet needs more money coming in (hence, this pitch to those not already members). More

As an official Ricochet Moderator,™ some days I despair for the grand experiment in civil, right-wing community building that is Ricochet. So much of my energy on the site is spent dealing with sniping and griping that I start to wonder if anyone actually wants to have a conversation.

Too many times it feels like members are here to repeat the same arguments like a Groundhog Day from Hell, burn acres of strawmen, gloat over the fellow Ricochetti they consider their enemies, and bring up every less-than-complimentary thing anyone has ever said to them as justification for their own bad behavior, like a half of a couple that wants a divorce but wants to force the other party to be the one who actually files. Two things have happened in the last few days though that have rekindled hope that this community can actually work as intended.

Infowars represent Conservative media in the same way McDonald’s represents vegan health food. Alex Jones’ brand of “journalism” is anything but. Infowars purport tinfoil-hat conspiracies that are not only discredited and insulting to our intelligence but hurtful to those impacted by their clickbait headlines, such as calling the murders of Sandy Hook Elementary school children in Newtown, CT “fake”. It beggars the mind how this man and his organization can publish such drivel.

Today Infowars has been officially purged by Apple, Facebook, and Spotify. IW is still able to stream directly from its own servers, but these three major distribution channels succumbed to public pressure to have them removed. The reason: unspecified “hate speech.” Most everyone won’t miss something they never wanted to listen to, but this is where my disdain for Infowars yields to my greater concern over who is the arbiter of what is defined as hate speech and what is and isn’t allowed.

There was a recent post (apologies to the author, I can’t seem to find it or I would link) about what products Ricochet members purchase that are made in America. I know we have a pretty diverse group of people here and this got me wondering what my fellow members have with them on a […]

How can Ricochet users get the most out of Ricochet moderation? That’s a question many users seem to have, and [email protected] is a key part of the answer. The [email protected] account is a joint account shared by all the Ricochet moderators and administered by Ricochet super-admin, Max Ledoux. This account also ties directly into Ricochet’s […]

So, I just have to ask. Ricochet is a center-right social media platform, with editors curating the public-facing, main feed between members’ and contributors’ posts. More

Yesterday at the supermarket, I saw a car with a “Resist Trump” bumper sticker. And then it hit me-why not use that phrase, with just a little change. How about a bumper sticker that says: Resist Liberalism, with the Ricochet “R” and arrowhead. Second line says Ricochet, home of center-right conversation. That might also make […]

Criticism of Trump is fine. It’s good and right from a free citizenry and the associated pundit class. I also enjoyed contempt, mockery, and snark when it is aimed at, for example, a Clinton.

Contempt, mockery, and snark are properly the province of late-night comedy types (including the Trevor Noahs of the world, even if they’re in denial), and also the agents of an opposition.

How about this idea for a conservative (i.e., center-right) website? For an annual fee, one receives editorial content, the ability to comment on website material, and a private area only for members. It’s a competitive environment out there, but the idea just might catch on with the right mix of writers, content, and pointed commentary […]

“The sun of real happiness shines in your life when you start to cherish others.” — Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche

When I think of summer, I experience a restorative state of mind: easy days, dazzling sunlight, leafy trees, blooming flowers and cheerful moments. I think of a bright, yellow sun, bathing the skies and shooing the clouds away. A sunny day lifts me up, even when things might not be going well.

It’s like getting a little holiday hug! I poured a coconut milk eggnog, with Bing and Satchmo in the background, and started writing my cards. Ricochet is productivity and procrastination, accomplishment and distraction, enrichment and inertia.

I know this well because this week marks my seventh year in this community. I came here after @jameslileks linked to his Ricochet article and described how paying for the privilege of commenting kept discourse civil and productive. I joined soon after, and don’t spend much time on other political/ cultural discussion sites.
