Zuby, rapper, musician, podcaster and author, stops by during his whirlwind tour of the United States. Son of Nigerian immigrants, he talks about his upbringing in Saudi Arabia and the UK, and the perspective on the world it offered him. He and Bridget cover the role of masculinity in today’s society, why the concept of “thought crimes” is so chilling, the rise of secular religions like “wokism” and climate change activism, and the idea of a moral panic void that must always be filled. They discuss the biggest issue of political polarization: that it shuts down the conversation, how if they were both actually grifters they’d be killin’ it right now, and the importance of having perspective and gratitude. Check out Zuby’s website here.

Jessica Michelle Singleton, stand-up comedian, bonds with Bridget over their mutually dysfunctional upbringings. They compare notes about raised by parents with borderline or narcissistic personalities, processing trauma with dark humor, overcoming abandonment issues, and the disassociation that makes them feel like robots or aliens – observing people who miss their families is very odd to them. In a frank and hilarious conversation, Jessica shares her story of moving to Alaska from Mississippi as a child, being left at a Waffle Hut by her dad, being raised by an alcoholic mother, and discovering a hidden family secret at 19. They talk the struggles and joys of stand-up comedy, living with a scarcity mindset, the terror of accepting love and not running from intimacy, and how we all struggle with some form of mental illness. Check out Jessica’s podcast, Ignorance is #Blessed.

Helen Dale is a columnist and commentator who also writes novels. Her first novel, The Hand That Signed the Paper, won the Miles Franklin award in Australia and also exposed Helen to cancel culture in 1995, long before it became what it is today. She and Bridget discuss the impossibility of proving you didn’t do something, the fact that all press is no longer good press, how most lobbyists are morally feral, and why most valuable thing about free speech is not what people say, it’s the fact that people can speak. They cover how to react when the mob comes for you, the importance of the secret ballot, the fact that stereotypes don’t exist in a void, and how part of being a grown up is accepting that people will laugh at you.

Yasmine Mohammed, author of Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, shares her story of growing up in a fundamentalist Islamic home in Canada. At 13, when she tried to report the abuse she suffered at the hands of her step-father, she was told by a judge “you come from a different culture, and that’s how your family chooses to discipline you, so we just have to accept that.” And here lies the inherent contradiction in the way in which the West views fundamentalist Islam versus other fundamentalist religions, and turns a blind eye to the abuse and suffering of millions of girls and women. She and Bridget discuss how alienating that is, the message those girls receive is “we don’t care about you, you are ‘other.'” They cover the escalation of rape culture, sexual harassment, the problems with celebrating the hijab, the indoctrination of attitudes towards girls and women in Muslim culture, and being called Islamophobic for criticizing a tool and system of oppression. They bond over shared traumatic experiences and discuss their belief that if you can use your own trauma to help others, it has not happened in vain. If you only ever listen to one episode of Walk-Ins Welcome, this is the episode.

Story Hour with Bridget Phetasy is a segment where Bridget reminisces with cousin Maggie and tells stories explaining who she is and how she got here. Full transcript available here: WiW47-AccidentalPundit-Transcript

This week Bridget covers how she went from being the Playboy Advisor to an accidental pundit on Ben Shapiro’s Election Special. She can trace every opportunity she’s had since leaving waitressing behind to one thing – Twitter. The realization that Twitter is just like high school, with its cool kids and its cliques helped her understand it and how to use it to her advantage. She discusses using it to hone her writing and her wit, being blocked by Demi Moore, the wrath of Dane Cook and her first mobbing (you can read the essay here), and how Twitter helped her get sober. Hear about her first taste of virality with her essay Bill Cosby Raped Me… Kind Of, how she built her following and created her own community of people who offer support in some of her darkest moments. Her journey from Playboy to the Federalist was a direct result of the paradigm shift that occurred after Trump won the election. She honestly had no idea what she was getting into when it came to political commentary and being caught in the crossfire of the culture war. She wonders as much as anyone “How did I get here?”

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America discuss former special counsel Robert Mueller reportedly hesitating at testifying before the Democratic-controlled House Judiciary Committee. They also break down a recently released investigation into the blackface/KKK photograph found in the medical school yearbook of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. And for today’s crazy martini, Jim and Greg share thoughts on Washington’s new human composting law.

All over the net today are references to an ABC podcast with former Trump attorney John Dowd. The link is here. Since he was there at the very beginning of the investigations and is a long-time and highly-respected Washington D.C. insider, it’s definitely worth listening to. Amazingly, he claims it would be against Justice Department […]

The last time I posted about the Urbane Cowboys was when the illustrious Jon Gabriel appeared on our humble show. Since then, I have neglected posting new episodes here on Ricochet. For those of you unfamiliar with the Urbane Cowboys, Josiah Neeley of R Street Institute launched a monthly podcast. As it happens, we had […]

It’s a very busy day on the Three Martini Lunch. We begin by thanking Townhall.com for highlighting our podcast and close by discussing the sentencing of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and the most popular Christmas movies in various states (three states get it right and Nevada, of course, is very wrong). In between, we tackle three big martinis. We applaud President Trump for keeping the cameras rolling in Tuesday’s border wall discussions with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and plead for more transparency in our government. We groan as a no confidence vote for British Prime Minister Theresa May unfolds after her failure to get a Brexit plan approved. And we shake our heads as a judge orders Stormy Daniels to reimburse President Trump nearly $300,000 in legal fees, but attorney Michael Avenatti says it’s not a win for Trump because he’s really sure he’ll win his other case against Trump.

I’m Bridget. Some of you might know me from Twitter (@bridgetphetasy)–it’s my primary residence. I’m very excited about my new podcast, Walk-Ins Welcome, that has been given a home here at Ricochet by the benevolent folks in charge. Each week I’ll talk to a guest about grit: how they persevere in life and how they get out of their own way. The idea for this show evolved as a reaction to what I see as a growing culture of victimhood; so instead of whining about how everyone is victim (and perpetuating the problem), I wanted to create something that motivated people and made them laugh.

For my debut episode I welcomed actor Steve Howey (you might know him as Kev on Showtime’s Shameless) and we cover a lot of ground from his first agent, the odd jobs you have to work before you “make it” to his thoughts about free speech, “let the psychos speak so we know who they are.”

It was important to me to create an evergreen hour that exists outside the news cycle, a little oasis you can tap into in the middle of a hard week or weekend or whenever and fill up on some humor, some stories and maybe a tip or a quote that invigorates you to keep fighting that good fight against your own demons. In a world that feels increasingly crazy, we can only control one thing: how we react to it.

Last week, the United States and Canada failed to reach an agreement on the ongoing NAFTA 2.0 renegotiation. Going into last week it was widely expected that any NAFTA deal would need to be concluded by the end of August. Nevertheless, Canada and the United States resume talks this week. Instead of closing the deal […]

Mike Jefferson had me on his sports podcast to discuss the NFL protests, the blight of inner-city education, the “genocide” of black youth shooting each other and the lie the Left purports regarding police brutality. Open-minded folks like Mike J. sharing a right-of-center perspective with his audience is a good start in bringing people together, as […]

Welcome to the Harvard Lunch Club podcast for July 25, 2017 it’s the Smart Girl Goes to Harvard edition of the podcast with our special (smart) guest CO-HOST (first time ever!) Teri Christoph of Smart Girl Politics Podcast fame.

It’s kind of like a podcast version of a junior high school dance. We’re all a little bit clumsy and awkward, but the (political) hormones are thick in the air! We had a great time. As for Teri maybe she didn’t, like, listen to our show before agreeing to join us. But it all turns out for the best in the end.

Recently, on one of Scott Adams live Periscope videos, he was asked if he would appear on an Adam Corolla podcast. He responded that he would, if invited. Given that he is an author with books to tout, I imagine that he would welcome an invitation to appear on Ricochet, and would offer us an […]
