CDC Health Emergency Extension Could Be the Least of Our Problems

Is anyone surprised that the CDC has extended the public health emergency regarding COVID-19 for 90 more days? Of course, their “reasoning” is that cases are once again increasing; 95,000 new cases are being reported daily, and hospitalizations are “beginning to increase again.” At this point, I frankly do not care about these results: COVID is going to COVID, and what in the world does it mean that hospitalizations are “beginning to increase”?

What does this extended declaration tell us?

The news comes after the American Medical Association and 15 other national health care organizations called on federal health officials to maintain the public health emergency as COVID-19 cases rise. In a May 10 letter, the groups asked for the emergency order to remain in place for patients to access vaccines, tests, treatments, flexible care, and affordable coverage.

I’ve been wanting to do the Ancestry research for awhile, even the DNA thing and held off.  I think I want to go ahead and do it, and share with my sister as part of a special Christmas gift.  Can anyone suggest their successes (or not) with this research?  Are there different levels and were […]

Online Dating: Social Justice Warriors and Frozen Snowflakes

This seems like something that could be added to the conversation on social justice warriors. While browsing Hinge this evening, I came across this profile which took me aback, something that rarely happens anymore. This person’s response to a prompt about “what social cause I care about” was by far the craziest I’ve ever read on one of these sites. There is a theory that some people say far-fetched things to impress other people especially in blue cities like Chicago, but the sheer madness and breadth of what he invented here makes me think he was actually being quite concrete. Here’s his answer:

“Disabling the white, ableist, cis-hetero patriarchy by destroying capitalism, firing all cops, and guillotining the rich.”

I had a thought about the relationship between oppression (racial or otherwise) and riots. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been reading Victor Klemperer’s I Will Bear Witness; a Diary of the Nazi Years.  It is the day-to-day record of  life as a Jew in Nazi Germany between (in Volume 1) 1933 and 1941.  History buffs will […]

“Help, Help I’m being oppressed!”  Peasant, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I had not heard the word oppression before watching this hilarious British comedy.  However, I knew one thing: I wanted to oppress the {expletive} out of that peasant.  Every time I heard the word oppression, oppress, or oppressor, it was used by whiny […]
