The New New Normal

 

Stay six feet apart. Wear your mask. This, we were told, is the New Normal.

Then “two weeks to slow the curve” turned into much, much more. 14 days became 14 months. It started with the shutdown of “nonessential businesses.” But who decides what is essential? Politicians, of course, but they told us they were using “science.” Liquor stores were essential. Clothing stores were not. If you ever criticized someone for sitting around the house drunk and naked rather than going to work, you need to apologize. They were performing essential services. You could still buy clothes at Walmart, but only because they also sell Pop Tarts, which makes them essential.

Against Returning to Normal?

 

Many Twitter “blue checks” are panicked over a “return to normal.” While the coronavirus pandemic was barely a month old, the Delaware County (PA) Council posted a Facebook video conference with repeated references to the well-meaning but nauseating platitudes of the day, including our “new normal” and “we’re all in this together.”

My eyes rolled so far back that I could almost see my sinuses. This was not my idea of “normal.” And if “we’re all in this together,” why were we more divided than ever?

As the cries echo across the country to end lockdowns so that we can return to our “normal” lives, it’s become clear to me that there is no normal to which we can return. Of course, the word begs the question, “What is normal?” Here is one definition of the word: Preview Open
