Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America enjoy seeing Democrats get accused of caving in the shutdown standoff and seeing the avalanche of leftist criticism aimed at Chuck Schumer. They also shake their heads as the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rules that the current congressional map is unconstitutional gerrymandering and a new map must be drawn, likely costing the Republicans seats. And they’re disgusted as North Korea keeps finding ways to turn the Winter Olympics in South Korea into an opportunity to glorify its own communist dictatorship, and media figures like NBC’s Lester Holt seem only too happy to help.

The Mouse That Ate Hollywood

It’s been rumored for a couple of weeks now but it became official on Thursday morning. The Walt Disney Company is acquiring the majority of assets from 21st Century Fox, thereby creating the world’s largest media company by far. This deal will have regulatory hoops to jump through all over the world and will probably take 18 to 24 months to close.

It’s much easier to list the assets that Disney will not get as opposed to what they do get. Not included in the deal:

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America are very cautiously optimistic about tax reform getting done after the Senate Budget Committee approved the Senate bill and several of the likely holdouts now seem ready to pass it. They’re also concerned following the latest North Korean missile test, which seems to indicate the communist regime could hit the U.S. mainland with a nuclear-armed ICBM. And they react to NBC firing longtime “Today” host Matt Lauer over sexually inappropriate actions.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America welcome the news that another major figure in the Benghazi terrorist attack is now in U.S. custody – only hundreds more to go. They also shudder as the accusations of actor Kevin Spacey allegedly preying upon a 14-year-old boy years ago elicits another round of “everybody knew” in Hollywood. And they discuss the odd transformation of Megyn Kelly, from presidential debate moderator and hard-hitting interviewer to lighthearted morning host discussing Halloween decorations and dance moves.

Trump vs. NBC

So we’re just going to jump into it. Yesterday morning, the President Tweeted the following: “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!”

That comment was in response to an NBC news report about a July 20 meeting where the President said he wanted a 10-fold increase in the US nuclear arsenal, and everyone had to patiently explain the costs, the impracticality, and the international agreements that prevented such a thing. It was also after that meeting that Rex Tillerson allegedly called the President a “moron.” (Not only does the President dispute that report, but several other people, including Gen. Mattis, say the report is inaccurate.)

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America applaud Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for squashing the “blue slip” system and expediting the confirmation of judicial appointments. Even though they’re pretty sure President Trump is joking about pulling network licenses in response to “fake news,” they explain why a president should never be threatening the existence of a media outlet over their content. And they cheer Ronan Farrow for his impressive reporting on the extent of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults and harassment, while also blasting NBC for its lame explanation for refusing to run the story months ago.

Pants-on-Fire NBC Walks Back Fake News Completely

Well, here we go again. The MSM, so anxious every day to dig up dirt on Trump that they no longer bother with reliable sources, have had to completely back down from a completely Fake News story. It looked like a bombshell, but again, it was “two sources briefed on the evidence” that “included” a certain word:

NBC News dropped what the network hyped as a “potential bombshell” last week. “Manafort Notes From Russian Meet Contain Cryptic Reference to ‘Donations’” the original headline read. The story claimed that Manafort’s notes from the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with White House aide Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer included the word “donations” near a reference to the Republican National Committee.

Must See TV: The Legend of Don Ohlmeyer

Don Ohlmeyer in 1998 (AP)

There are but a handful of American network executives that can rightly be called legends in the land of television. There were the founders, David Sarnoff and William Paley, the mavericks like Ted Turner and the two men that shaped what I and thousands of others do for a living — live sports production. Those men were a vibrant force at ABC and their names were Roone Arledge and Don Ohlmeyer.

Ohlmeyer, aged 72, passed away Sunday night. His contributions will not pass soon.

Live! It’s Television!

A glimpse inside the production truck during Fox’s presentation of Grease.

America seems to have a new fascination with live television. NBC has found ratings success by presenting Broadway musicals such as The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and The Wiz.

This has spawned others to get into the game. Tonight Fox presented Grease and ABC has announced its entry into the game with Dirty Dancing.

Donald Trump to Host SNL Nov. 7

Promotion from Donald Trump’s last hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live in 2004. (With Trump impersonator Darryl Hammond.)

On June 29, the good and decent management of NBC Universal had had enough of Donald Trump’s mean statements about illegal immigrants. No longer would their network associate with such a cruel, divisive figure:

At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values.
