Megyn Kelly Leaves Fox News for NBC

Just in from NBC:

Megyn Kelly, one of America’s most prominent news anchors, will join NBC News, it was announced today by Andrew Lack, Chairman of the NBCUniversal News Group.

Kelly will become anchor of a new one hour daytime program that she will develop closely with NBC News colleagues. The show will air Monday through Friday at a time to be announced in the coming months.

Righting the Ship at NBC

lack2Andrew Lack was a producer at 60 Minutes at CBS in 1992 when his opposition at NBC blew up. Literally.

Dateline NBC had produced a story about Thomas and Elaine Moseley whose 17-year-old son, Shannon, died when his Chevy truck exploded after being T-Boned by a drunk driver. When NBC couldn’t replicate the crash, they rigged it to get the footage they wanted.

At first, NBC News president Michael Gartner called it an accurate representation. GM sued and, within weeks, Dateline‘s producers were fired, Gartner would resign, and Jane Pauley and Stone Phillips were forced to read an on-air apology.

NBC Wanted Jon Stewart to Host ‘Meet the Press’

After a prolonged ratings slide, NBC News recently handed the “Meet the Press” microphone to Chuck Todd. Most Sunday morning beltway shows have seen dramatic declines in viewership, but MTP was dropping them at a slightly higher rate that its cookie-cutter competitors.

The network hopes that the ginger-goateed reporter can right the ship, but they seriously considered a much more radical choice. According to New York magazine, NBC News held negotiations with Jon Stewart and were prepared to offer “The Daily Show” comic “virtually ‘anything’ to bring him over.”
