India’s 2019 federal election was called on May 23, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies winning an increased majority of 350 out of 543 seats in Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. The BJP won 300 seats itself, which means that they will not need to govern in coalition, but have enough seats to form Government in their own right.

This is what the results look like on a map (BJP+ is of course saffron):

Let’s just go ahead and get this out of the way up front. The recent massacre at the two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, was an unspeakable act of terror against innocent, defenseless victims. Okay? But make no mistake, this extraordinarily unusual act will be used by leftists and Muslims the world over to bludgeon […]

In confirmation hearings for Secretary of State nominee Mike Pompeo, Senator Corey Booker chided the Presbyterian Sunday School teacher for holding to the same view of same-sex marriage that most Americans held just a few years ago. Pompeo, you will be shocked to learn, is against it.

The senator went on to justify his marriage questions by alluding to the persecution of homosexuals in other countries. Here is a part of their exchange, according to The Federalist:

In the June 3-4 edition of the Wall Street Journal, “Review” section, Roger Scruton did an essay “The Case for Nations”. “You cannot immigrate into a tribe, a family, or a faith, but you can immigrate into a country, provided you are prepared to obey the rules that make that country into a home. As I looked on Twitter about Trump’s immigration ban, I noticed a lot of anger and, of course, there are the protests going on at airports. There is an article from the Cato Institute calling the ban illegal. Another thing is the ban does not appear to have the countries where he supposedly has business […]

It is time for an update on the worldwide jihad of Muslim attacks on Christians. If you have been relying on mass media to keep you informed, then there is a lot that you just don’t know. This is an ongoing story that our Leftist mass media have shown no interest in conveying to Americans, […]

When I first learned of PEGIDA, it was explained to me the organization had deplorable roots. Even so, an explosion of racism seemed a weak explanation for the group’s popularity. The more likely scenario was that the most organized and assertive communicators of common grievances would be cheered by kind and reasonable citizens even if […]

We hold these truths to be self evident… or not. Political discourse is a lot different than it was at the time of our national birth. Today we are more likely than not to eschew the elegant and instead concentrate on burying each other in numbers, statistics, polls and “facts.” More

Promoted from the Ricochet Member Feed by Editors Created with Sketch. What to do with Muslim Refugees?

Rohingya Refugees

Nicholas Kristof has a heart-rending column in the New York Times about the plight of refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma). Rohingya Muslims are being persecuted by their government and rounded up into concentration camps. Thousands are fleeing by sea, but no government — including ours — is willing to take them in. Often, refugees are sent back to Myanmar to almost certain death. This week, even the Muslim country of Indonesia ordered two vessels carrying hundreds of Rohingya pushed back to sea.

Unlike so many liberal leaders and reporters who love to lambaste straw men, I try to judge ideological groups by their best arguments and most representative members. When considering Islam, one fair measure seems to be the character and leadership of its founding prophet, Mohammed. Not only does the whole belief system depend on his […]
